Oil Pump screen and pick-up tube Installation ? clearance need to be checked from the pan?

Yep. Install the pump onto the rear main cap. Now insert the pick up loosely so that you can take a measurement. When the motor is inverted and horizontal, measure the distance from the oil pan rails on the block, to the bottom of the pick up/highest point. Now measure the distance on the oil pan from the mounting flange to the deepest part. You should have 3/8s of an inch clerance. Adjust the pick-up accordingly and shove it in to secure it.

Next, secure the pump in a vice and take a 5/8s open end wrench and place it over the buldge of the pick-up and tap it in with a hammer.

Next, find a piece of metal which you can mount to one of the bolts of the pump and weld the other end unto the pick-up pipe. This last step is just for insurance purposes. :) :) I speak from bad experiences

if your affaid to measure, i usually put the pickup on too high then place the pan on ,dont bolt it on yet . this will get you close. then i go about 1/4 " below that point,.

Properly install the screen: When installing the screen on your new oil pump, NEVER use a vise to hold the pump during installation. Damage to the oil pockets will occur no matter how gently you may think you are clamping the pump in the vise. By damaging the oil pockets the oil pump may jam or seize during normal operation. Always install a new gasket when applications require them. It is also very important to utilize the correct tools designed to install press-in design screens. Your local tool supplier will have these tools available.
