I agree with all the changes that make it a 301, what a screamer!
Back in the day ('69 & '70) There was a guy called Rhino that ruled our little town with his 301 powered '55 chevy. There wasn't anything that could touch that car. Big Block Vette's, Z28's, Hemi cuda's, nothing and I whitnessed that myself!! It seemed like there was no end to the amount of rpm that car would turn with out floating. If he had a tough race he would just rev it up untill it did win! It was a totally amazing car!:D
Just so that I don't mis-understand you, You are running 12.5:1 compression on pump gas? If so, you'll cause detonation to destroy your engine. As for 2 years at 12000 rpms, how much of that time was actually spent running 12000? I could buy 9000 or perhaps even 10000 for a few passes; but, @ 12000, I still say it wouldn't last more than a pass or two. Even the original DZ-302's red lined below 9000. I guess that I am just one of those guys that would have to physically see it (consistantly) to believe it.Quote:

i never said mine revved to 12 grand i shift mine at 7500 yea they can last past 6100. our friend eddie had his and it would rev to 12 grand had it for 2 years. and it ran fine. and yes mine runs on pump gas with a little octane booster now and then. it runs jsut fine. and it never runs hot. will run 180 all day long.

alright finally someone who has seen a 301 run. they are bad ass aint they. it ry to tell people about these motors all the time they say imf ull of it. finally someone who has alson seen the great "baby rat"301 run. theya re fun to drive and will wind to the moon.............scooter
gentlemen, I just found this forum and felt it necessary to input 2cents worth. in the early 70's when i began assembling racemotors many of the local left handers ran true 301's. These were small journal 327 blocks decked .80 to .100 with a 3.00 inchstroke small journal 283 crank. all these cranks were forged. heads were decked .040 to .050 and they used 12.5:1 327 pistons. aprox 12:1 301's resulted due to the loss of cid from decking. the only 283 block that would go .125 over was a special elevated oil filter boss block based on early corvette 327 castings underbored to 283 found in early chevyII's. these ran 302 pistons. a true 301 would rev past 8000 rpm with a rodchester 2 bbl. A tunnel rammed 301 will go 10,500+ with a roller cam and stud girdle. as for longivity, i assembled a small journal "302" using the chevy II block for a good friend in 1977. it is still in his 69 camero today. it has the optional "off-road" factory 302 cam, angle plug 2.20 heads from that era, a mallory unilite (a good ignition is manditory to seek higher revs) and a holley 750. this combo will still turn 8,000 rpm thru 2.5 inch duels. a 3200 converter, th400 and 5.13's this antique combo will out street any of the foxbox boys and is close to 25 years old.

Am I the only one who was never impressed by the 301? My dad replaced the 348 in his 58 impala with one and it was dog slow. It wasnt a race motor but it had some head work, a 30/30 cam, headers and a factory four barrel intake. It always seemed to run radical after it had been built. Though it could have been the fact it was in a heavy ass four door 'pala with a "slush-o-matic" powerglide.
On the other hand ive always been a fan of the 283's and the 327's. As a general rule they would always run strong, even with the mis-match of parts guys would install on them.
THE 302 mouse motor is awesome . Ive personally seen these bad boy's rev out . They sometimes come on a little slow at first but jump out like a coil spring once they get going. They can really take the R.P.M.'s. My cousin had one in his 69 Z-28 .Two Holley 600's on a Weiand tunnel ram. He even had a cool can for the fuel .The car was unbeatable , he reved the motor to at least 8500 and it kept running.Except for the rear end ocasionally.:3dSMILE: :3dSMILE: :3dSMILE:
i have to disagree with you on that though if you take a 327 block with a 283 crank that makes a 302.? and all 283's can be bored .125 over even the 57........scooter.......i am not trying to pick a fight here..........

i am building a 283 for my 5 window and think that they are great little powerhouses
