    76 Corvette fuel pump

     



    I have the engine down replacing the cam and when I took the fuel pump out the rod the arm pivots on was loose so I decided to replace the pump. I bought one from OReillys, part#m23014, and the outlet fitting is too small, The fuel line is 3/8 and this pump will accept 5/16 fuel line. Anyone else ever run across this problem and if so what did you do to fix it?

    Ken I seem to recall getting a few fuel pumps in the past that included a brass adapter fitting to correct line size mismatch. It lets the manufacture use one pump for multiple applications.

    I suspect someone makes a fitting that will work. Around here Ace hardware used to carry a very good selection of fittings.....unfortunately that has shrunk considerably over the years. Anymore if I need a less than common fitting I end up getting it off the internet. Amazon is good if you can find it there (because of shipping) and E Bay is often the second choice again because of the speed of shipping,,,,but that's kind of hit or miss.

    Thanks Mike, I'd forgotten about adapters. Now to see if I can find one 5/16 x 3/8.

    Ken, is it 5/16" on the line, adapting into a 3/8" at the pump? Your initial post mentions 7/16" line, a larger fitting necking down to smaller at the pump?

    If you have a Lowe's near by they still carry a pretty good range of adapters, or at least the one I go to does.

    My first post didn't make much sense so I edited to read 3/8 fuel lin and 5/16 fuel line. I'm beginning to think the pump was packaged wrong since most of the 350 powered Vettes run the same pump. I bought a new fuel line from inlinetube and it's 3/8 line and the fittings take a 5/8 wrench.
    I ordered another one from OReillys and it'll be here tomorrow afternoon. Thus is keeping me from firing the engine and breaking in the new cam and is quite frustrating for both me and my grandson who has been a HUGE help.

    JMHO, new mechanical pumps are pretty much all made off shore.
    Most will put out more pressure than carbs are suited for requiring a regulator, and most of them do not last very long.

    After fighting this battle on my 36, replacing 3 mechanical pumps in a little over a year (it was a real bugger to change the pumps on my 36), two of them were barely over 90 days (you guessed it 90 day warranty), and adding a pressure regulator because the pressure was greater than 10 psi (all 3), frustration of adapting fuel lines to fit Carter OEM pumps (off shored now). Plus, the motor compartment is really cramped in my 36 making changing the mechanical pump a little difficult (did I mention it was a bugger to change). on the last go around I finally gave up an changed it over to an electric pump. I have not had a problem since (6 years now).

    Ironically, the cost of the 3 mechanical pumps by themselves was more than 1 quality electric pump, not to mention all the frustrations...

    Thanks for sharing the info. I did the same and then put a 3 port regulator right after it. Looped the excess flow/ psi back to the inlet side. Worked well.. except I found it noisy. So I swapped to the stock mechanical.

    I gave up getting mechanical lift pumps from Orielly's. They never seem to last and I've had several mis boxed units. Which is severely a PITA!

    The new pump came I today and it was identical to the one I have. The store manager was there and he started looking through his fitting catalog and he came up with part # AGS BLF73B. Since the pump has a pipe thread fitting the fuel line with the inverted flare would never seal even if it did fit. It's 1/4-18 to 5/8-18. Use for adapting a 5/8-18 Inverted port to a 5/16andquot; Domestic fuel line.
    This will require a little massaging of the fuel line, but I think between Ian and I we can get it together.
