Help Me Pick Some Heads For Christmas Present

So much prep and paint that my fingers are literally bleeding and my back feels like Im 100 yrs old.

Engine bay was a major pain in the tail to prep. Loads of surface rust removal and in corners and cracks smaller than a nat's southside.

We did everything humanly possible to remove all surface rust (short of media blasting) and though I think we killed it, I still used a rust converter to reach the deep pores and give us a rock solid base for our epoxy coating.

With the bay painted we could drop the motor back in.

Due to time constraints I had to throw the re-wire plan out the window for a partial re-wire and re-route clean up job to tidy things up. Used a high temp braided loom which gives a cleaner look than standard loom, plus it matches the look of braided SS lines.

Plumbed some fancy but functional fuel system components. That regulator immediately solved the off-idle bog we had with the mechanical pump overpowering the eddie 1406.

With only two days left we had just enough time to add a few fun parts before the show date. Grant wheel...

Basically had Friday night to detail the rig before the next morning's show but we got it done, with an average of 4 hrs of sleep a night for the last two weeks, we got it done!!

Here's a pullback shot showing my son's first ever project in the back of his bed. It's a 1949 Schwinn Straightbar frame that he built a boardtrack racer around. The other bike is my build from a couple years ago ('82 XV750 I built into a british cafe racer).

Wow, I'm sorry I missed this whole thread ! I don't know enough to give advice about building motors so I never checked it out, I kept seeing replies so I though I'd check it out. You did a killer job bringing that old square body back to life! I love it! Your engine detailing it amazing and your hard work paid off! That Schwinn looks like it would be a blast to ride as well!

I've helped on many, many projects, but I think this one turned out the best. Memories of this build will last each of you through your lifetimes and will set the mood for bigger and more complex projects together in the future. :D

You played a critical role in helping a rookie father son team fill in the blanks that got us through to the finish line. For that we thank you and the other members here for lending a hand and keeping the learning process moving. Good stuff!!

The last thing you will want to do is to nail down the ignition timing, centrifugal advance and vacuum advance. I wrote this several years ago, then some of the other guys on the forum pitched in with their ideas. It turned out to be a pretty good tutorial for spark timing, which can make the difference between a motor that runs great and a motor that just runs.

I've set initial to 14 degrees with total @ 32. Runs outstanding from off idle and up, very crisp!
