I started a new project with a 1982 Chevy c10 and instead of rebuilding the engine myself I sent it off to a shop. Got it back put it together ran it and all and I noticed my harmonic balancer isn't lined up with my timing marker. I have done this about 3 other times with different engines and had no problems. I tried a different balancer as well and broke one of the tools off in my crank. Any suggestions???:confused:**)
your thread title does not match what you are describing .. are you saying the balancer will not install completely ( seat against the crank snout) or are you saying the alignment is off ..( pointer not lining up with zero )
as said above, state your exact problem so we. can get an answer, Chevy made a couple different timing covers with different pointer locations, so maybe you don't have the original cover or balancer, which is probably what I suspect. also your outer ring could have slipped meaning that balancer is toast. find top dead center and remark it if it's a new cover (or not the original) or balancer, no big deal. I also have broke the tool off before it always seems it should seat back further, measure and mark the depth before installation if you aren't familiar with it.
If I'm understanding you correctly, you're saying that the damper won't press fit all the way back to where the rear of the damper "thunks" against the crank gear. Is that correct? Is this an aftermarket damper? There have been many of these abortions made in China and other "offshore" locations around the world. They might have had the bore in the damper hub cut to the correct diameter to press fit onto the crank snout....and then again, maybe not.

and how do the belts and pulleys line up ...
My exact problem is that the balancer won't press completely on. It's a stock damper. The damper is acting as if it already as far back as it will go. But the pulleys lined up.
The balancer won't completely install and seat.
Take a close look at the inside bore. If it has any kind of a stop, then take a measurement and compare it with how far it is going on.
I seem to recall having a balancer once which looked like it wasn't deep enough in, so I pulled it off. It had a shoulder machined in which positively positioned it. So i put it back on and forgot about it.
Do you think the shop did anything different to the crank? I had them shave it when they rebuilt it. Like I said the rest of the engines I've done myself I didn't have a problem.
a google search on balancers show various thicknesses .. perhaps you need a thicker one .. it is most unlikely that yours is simply not going on far enuff .. the belts would not line up .. this one is about 1 inch thick .. others are 2 inches or so ..
Will the fact that I went from a single sprocket timing chain to a double sprocket timing change that?? I just thought about that but I don't think it did on my 65 suburban unless the timing cover was different???
