Welcome to CHR! There're some guys here who are amazing at diagnosing problems, but no one has a crystal ball - at least not one that works...

What happened in that 24 hour period that changed your exhaust note? Is your '69 Impala stock or modified (if you know)? How much oil has it been burning, and have you been good about keeping it changed regularly, and topped off between changes? How many miles on the clock? Automatic tranny?
Come back with some specifics about your engine & the situation that brought you here, and people will try to help.

Enjoy the little things in life, and you may look back one day and realize that they were really the BIG things.

Sounds like in could be stuck rings if its been sitting that long. Pull the plugs, pour a little diesel fuel in each cylinder, let sit for a few days, crank with the plugs out to blow any fuel out, change oil, put the plugs back in, run for a bit, do a compression test and see what it looks like. It might not help but it's worth a shot. A band I was in many years ago bought an old Ford bus that sat for several years and had the same issue. Some rings were stuck and this fixed it.
