Having problem putting in reverse wants to kick then dies thinking plugs and wire set has edelbrock carb 600 cfm on it replaced cam lifters and timing gear set

Geo, perhaps you could begin by telling us the motor mfg and type, followed by the cam mfg and part number. I'm suspecting that you have used a radical cam without adding ignition timing and resetting the idle adjustment screw on the carb.

Is this an automatic transmission? What is your idle speed (rpm)?

We’re a pretty knowledgeable bunch but I’ll be darn if we’re not fresh out of crystal balls.

Could you give us a little bit more info like?
1. What engine
2. What car
3. We know it’s an automatic, but is it TH350/400 etc.
4. You replaced cam and lifters and timing set – did you use stock components
5. Where are you timing the engine? If it’s a stock 350 Chevy, I start with 8 degrees and work from there with all vacuum disconnected.
6. Do you have a stock ignition?
7. What is your idle speed?
8. Is this an Edelbrock 1406? Great unit but tend to be rich out of the box and on a stock engine might need to tune a bit.

Others will chime in I’m sure. Once again welcome and get us some more specific details and we’ll see what we can do to help you out.

This is why I asked if it was an automatic, I've experienced this cenerio before, but it was a manual tranny, some dumb a$$ had run the ignition wire near the linkage, lol. If its an automatic, then converter size and/or stall speed, and/or timing/carb tuning issues could be the problem.

Automatic 350 had it rebuilt from ground up in 06 new converter 350 engine all stock in a1980 silverrado engine is out of a 73 pontiac

So the motor has run good for 10 years and nothing has been changed on it. Suddenly this problem started? Does it do this all the time? or only when cold? Runs ok in other gears? Motor runs smooth, no misses?

Yep the reason i replaced the cam and all the cam had flat lobes on it and the lifters were worn badly in 2nd gear would ackfire and lo on power until it got to going then backfire and pop crackle snap

Had them checked shoots fire really well

You do know that Pontiac distributors of that era rotate counter-clockwise? Perhaps your firing order is messed up.

so its a 1973 Pontiac engine with a converter from a 1980 Chev 350 silverato in a 350 turbo?

Flat lobes cam wipeout, replaced(probably flat again) and a dist that has wires break from advance movement over years?????????

I think maybe he needs a new rear u-joint that doesn't bind up when changing rotation??????

lol! Jerry your dry sense of humor is amazing at times, I was thinking a reverse chrome plated muffler bearing. But you may have nailed it with the u joint, as long as they flip the pinion gear over to accommodate the rotation change, duh...
