chevy dealership doesn't carry a timing cover for a 72' 350 block... what's my choice now?
Are you sure it's the cover leaking or could it be the front seal at the crank/balancer? Did you use a new seal with the new balancer?
yes, used a new seal... greased up well before putting on the harmonic balancer. It doesn't appear to be leaking as it's dry around that seal. Just looks like leaking like a sieve on the front seal. I'm wondering if I shouldn't have used this sealant (right stuff gasket maker)... used the old blue RTV or something else... with the felpro one piece gasket I started with only putting sealant in the corners and then progressed to both sides of the front seal, top and bottom... crazy leak.. not a drip but almost a steady stream.
Is your pan bent? Have you put a straight endue on it?
on the oil pan yes... from corners towards the back. and new timing cover... I'm looking right now for a better quality one that might be available locally... all mr gasket or balakamp...
Is the right stuff gasket maker designed to be used with a gasket? Or is it the stuff you use instead of a gasket?
I thought both.... but i'm will to tear it all down and try something else... maybe solder them together... lay a welding bead ?
also thinking of getting rid of the single piece felpro gasket and trying something else...
Sometimes the silicone (right stuff) is too slick with a gasket and the gasket slips out between the bolts. A lot of times Dealerships will just lay a heavy bead of silicone around the pan and install it loosely until it hardens then tighten to specs. Although the one piece gaskets usually seal pretty good with nothing on them.
so maybe try it with no gasket and use the right stuff alone?
I always let the silicone dry completely (24hrs min) before putting into service.
And clean the mating surfaces with a little acetone to ensure the silicone sticks well to both sides.
got it...used lacquer thinner but have acetone...
Lac thinner will work just as good.
