Im going to be building a 327. Since chevy swears that they put a 327 4bolt main into a corvet way back when i decied i would take one apart to find out, it was a 2 bolt main. so here im stuk debeating weather or not to machine the bloclk for a 4 bolt or not. Will it make that big of a diffrence? but i really need some help on what i should bye for this motor. I want 350-450hp out of it i know it can be done but i dont know the specs. can anyone help?
Never saw or heard of a 4 bolt 327, anyone else, Bob, Streets, Tech ?
Never heard of a 4 bolt main 327. 302, 350, & 400, yes.......and an obscure reference to a 305 Canadian truck engine once.
While there's certainly no harm in a 4 bolt main, this may be another of those "more is better" things. Keep in mind, most performance BB Chevs have two bolt mains. Although, getting real hp in the range stated is going to take quite a package. Modifying the stock 327 block shouldn't be too much of a problem. I think Milodon, and probably others, make 4 bolt caps for the 327, and a competent machine shop can do the modifications and install them.
I have a 64 327/375 and it has two bolt engine......I drag raced it 29 tears ago and was turning 12,5's with it,,,,,,,never had a problem...am putting one in a truck now......LOVE SB Chev!!!
Hmmmm. GM has an unfortunate tendency to "reuse" designations from different years and models. Some may remember the first Z11 "option" which was also known as the "Mystery" engine. It was a precursor to the engine we call the Chevrolet Big Block, came as a 427, was used in both NHRA and NASCAR, had the "porcupine" valve splaying. That was 1963/4. The 396 followed as the first of the production big blocks in 1965.Quote:

Actually the Z-11 & the Mystery motor where to differant engines. The Z-11 was actually a production engine, a stroked 409= 427 CI. The Mystery engine was also 427 CI, but it was never a production engine. The Z-11 was a 63 Impala factory lightweight car with a factory stroked 409

you can put up to 500 hp on a 2 bolt main. if your intensions are to only run it hard every now and then. if you are going to race it on a regular basis, you could run into some serious reliability problems. if you have enough money to get 450 hp out of a 327, then just sell your 327 and go with a 350 4 bolt block. you have so many more options with a 350. not to mention, you will have more hp with the same amount of cash spent.
Nothing wrong with a 2 bolt 327. I had one rated at 300 HP and I put over 30000 miles on it with a heavy foot most of the time and had no problems

Every book I looked in says chevrolet didn't build a 4 bolt 327. But the 327 2 bolt should rev to 6500 R.P.M's if built right . Screw in studs and guide plates are a must . Also pink rod's are also a excellent choice .Good luck That 327 is one of the best engine's ever designed. You should be able to acheive the H.P. that you need.
They had to stock up that warehouse in Chicago so that they could perpetuate the urban legends. I hear there are 2000, tri-power 348's there packed in crates with corrosion inhibitor to protect them! SSSSHHHHHHHHHH, don't tell anybody!!:p :LOL:Quote:
