Hello all, long time lurker, first time poster. Just got my first SBC, a 327, and I'm trying to find out if the PO was true in that it is a Corvette roller 327.
The engine cover, that trapezoid, I cannot find anywhere on the web in images or text. What is this thing?

Well, first off welcome.
There were no factory 327 roller motors.
To find out what you have we would first need the number off the pad in front and just below the passenger cylinder head.

Looks like an aftermarket air cleaner to me, definitely not OEM.
Mike P is correct , there were no 327 roller motors.

Mako, welcome to the forum. Glad you're getting into posting. I'd vote for the aftermarket air cleaner box as opposed to OEM, too. Are there any markings on the top or sides? It's definitely different....
Yes, that is an aftermarket air cleaner--a relic from the past. I saw them advertised back in the 90's and they breathe from elements on the side. The ads stated they promoted a lot of air flow but they are something that did not catch on.
The air cleaner is similar to a Buick one. But the holes on the side make it aftermarket for sure. There were small chrome stacks that sat in the holes and were similar to injector stacks. Doubt if it ever could be better than standard 4" high full flow 14" filter.
I've had 1 of those air cleaners on a shelf for over 30 years, complete with the phoney injector stubs.

LOL.....Hell, I've even seen Corvette 307s and and 2 BBL 350s. The ratio of Corvette engines to Corvettes actually produced is probably about 100:1.
Of course having a soft spot for MOPARs myself, you'd be amazed at the number of 318, 383 and 440 HEMIs that are out there.
We'll probably have to wait for brother Severson to chime in on Fords side oiler Windsors.

Puts me in mind of a gent I know who's Dad had an XKE Jag with "an Offy" in it. I finally got to lay eyes on it one day sometime after his Dad had passed away, and sure enough, there on those small block Ford valve covers was "Offenhauser", big as life. :cool:Quote:
