You want to select your cam for power and torque where you'll use it, and let the idle take care of itself. If you select a cam for lots of overlap, like Comp Cams Thumper or Mutha Thumper, you may actually have an anemic engine that performs worse than stock, but makes the kids at the local gathering place fall all over themselves with a "Poser" idle. You're going to have to start with some specific details of your engine build.
