DD2000 shows that a basic 454. Would crank out the same kind of power #'s. I don't think it would cost even as much to buy a junker 454 and redo a few parts. add a few nice parts. and have a motor that will accelerate as good or better then a supercharged 357ci SB.
plus going with a whole nother motor means I can sell the motor I have for 3/4 the cost of the 454.

How can it be cheaper to build? then a 454 one of the most popular hot rod, performance, work engines.
Cause, even though a 500 caddy redlines at 5,500 ( I belive ) the power ant torque dosent have to be fought for, in an early 70's 500, the power and torque is arleady respectable, a 454 from the same era probably only pumps out 250 HP - 350 HP. I do not know what tranny's work or the bolt pattern of the mounts, the 500 is one of Tech's favorite motors so he will know those q's and correct me on any incorrect info, if there is any.

Yeah, ur stuck with a chevy engine, single bolt pattern on ur very expensive, TH350, get a 454 and, turn it into a 468, you'll get some power outa that, you could change the cam, intake and carb to gain small amounts of Hp's if you didn't want to rebuild and just freshen up the motor.Quote:

I would like to stay all motor. to bolt on better heads and a few other parts on the 357 I run now. wouldn't make enough accleration difference to be worth the cost.
Even a hyd roller cam. is a lil costly for a cam. yet the 12% torque increase threwout the running rpm range is almost worth it.
There is power per dollar. then there is just dollars.
I only make an extra $2000 per year. So the more the cost the longer I will have to just run what I have.
A lot of what was said here needs some punctuation corrections, it's sorta hard to discerne what's really being said. On another note, if you haven't heard of BOPC before then I'll explain. It means Buick, Olds, Pontiac, Cadillac. When you get a BOPC transmission the center of the mount is shaped in a downwards V instead of up like on the Chevrolet style. But whatever. So for you and your needs, since you don't have too much to work with, go big block and retain the stock stroke since the stroker crank will cost you another chunk and bore that beast out. Get some bigger pistons and go with that. You can build one for under 2000 if you can find a good used core which retains most of its parts and wasnt blown up. Cam, pistons etc.
But if I was you, I would start right and have everything on that block machined, etc etc. IMHO don't start something like that unless you are gonna do it right. If you needed it now then well, go for it. But I would most definately make the internals the way you are gonna want them for a long time. You can toss on bolt ons way easier in the future when you make some cash, but do the inside the right way or you might just have to pull it out again and tear it down. If it takes you another year then it will likely be worth it.....year = money = power = durability. Have fun with it.

But if I can get my 357SB to run like an actual performance engine. I will just bolt bits on it. .040 over, decked, aline honed, foreged crank, 4 bolt mains. I just feel it should be cranking out more torque.
