If it needs bored and such build a 383 out of it to start.
What kind of car is it going in, what's the intended usage, what kind of power you want to have, and what's your budget??
And what kind of gas mileage do you want?
Don't build something you can't afford to start.
It is going in my 88 Chevy truck and I intend to just have a fast little street rod that I can still use as a truck.
I was also wondering should I keep my TBI or switch it to a carb.
If i make it a 383 will my computer except the swap if not wut will I have to do
383 will work with stock tbi cam or very small hyd roller i have had them ground custom for this build. any CAM at will not idle good with good vac at GM spec the map will go nuts and engine will run like crap. no chip i ever seen will fix this ,i done some use stock or custom ground cam with the RHS v tech heads can use 1.6 rocker arms with stock cam
What heads and tranny do you have.rear gears, tire dia? A 383 built for high speed towing would work well. Lots of torq
I have a 700r4 at the moment don't no the rear gears stock rear end I also have the stock heads and a pair of Vortec heads I was planning on using
If I stick with the Vortec heads what size cam would y'all recommend. And I would like to know a few options on sticking with the TBI or switching it to a carb and get rid of all the computer crap. If I switch to the carb and it don't have a computer does it matter what size crank and cam I put in it. Thanks for all the helpp. When I start building it I'll try and add some pics to show everything thanks again
what cam with the TBI ? the gm cam.. any thing bigger just plain will not work .i went roller on the last one as the customer had a roller block so like i said i had a very small custom cam that would work. go carb you can make it take more cam . the old tbi are not very friendly to work overs. some guys have gone up to the 454 main body .moving up to a 383 with a stock cam with 1.6 rockers may work out good . i know many guys tried bigger cams.i never seen one that would work good
I wasn't planning on using the stock TBI i was going to buy a performance so if going carb is better ill go that way
