427 set up?

Hi, I'm new the the forum. My name is Steve and I'm a military guy. I am getting ready to build a 427 but am unsure of what heads and cam I want to run. I'm looking at Dart 230cc and AFR 235cc heads. As for the cam can't decide to weather to go with hyd, or SR cam, or what lift to run.

As for what I am looking for. I want the most power I can get but still be a drive 20 miles to town on a Saturday car and may to the beach. Basically I want want the biggest street-able cam I can have. I will be running a 6 speed T56 behind it.

First - Thank you for your service to your country. I am personally grateful to the men and women who don the uniform and serve.

Now, as to your engine - we need a lot more info as to what your up to!! From you post, I'll assume (yes I know - dangerous!)
1. You have a block that's been properly prepped to swing a 4.125" crank (my opinion - you be best with a Dart block).
2. You have a big bucket of money....

Now some question:
1. what vehicle do you plan on putting this engine into?
2. What is your rear end ratio?
3. When you say "20 miles to town" - do you care if it takes three gallons of gas?
4. Are you going to run this vehicle at a local track from time-to-time?
5. Is your heart set on a small block? There are several here (Pat and Jerry) who do this for a living and really know how to build a bodacious BBC - just askin..

230 heads is about right .cam solid roller if going past 6500 . and hyd roller under that . not hard and fast rules but close till you tell us more as to what your really up to :) THANKS FOR YOUR SERVICE

Hey thank you guys for the support! Real quick. I'm having a forum problem. as you can see I had to create a different screen name to a different email. My other log in Stevecritt was banned for no reason. I think it may be because I signed in from my government computer, I'm guessing its because I am in Afghanistan and its a weird IP maybe? If I could get unbanned that would be awesome lol.

Anywho. Yes I'm using a dart block, with Eagle forget assembly 4'' crank with h beams probe pistons. I have and engine builder building it for me.
Yes I'm set on SBC because this is going in my 95 Camaro. I will be going with a Ford 9'' and 3.73 gears. I don't want a drag car. I just want an Ls stomper lol.
Yes I will be running this at the track periodically but not every weekend. I just want to drive around town and Hotrod it a little with out it over heating and crap like that and like I said occassionaly to the beach which is about an hour or so drive.

I have set myself at about 15k for the engine. But I don't think I will be getting that high, well hopefully. As for the gas guzzling I'm no too concerned with it but if I can work it where she gets around 10mpg I that would be satisfying.

Power wise I would like to be close to 700 crank. But Not a necessity. This is why I ask you guys. Yes my engine builder has his Ideas But spending this kind of money you never put your eggs in one basket. Just not smart business. I know the cam to head matching is going to be crucial to making good reliable power. This is where you come in. :)

Well you've got the right block and I concur/defer with Pat, re; the heads. 700 horse is a lot of ponies to effectively street - not saying it can't be done and certainly the $15K is adequate however; you'll probably need to push 12:1 or better on your compression ratio to come away with 700 HP if you're going to stay naturally aspirated. A big BG Demon or a 1050 CFM Holley Dominator will do the trick there, but finding pump gas that gives you enough octane will be a challenge.

In that you're building from scratch and have the best possible block to start with, you can get real close on the deck clearance and fairly thin on the head gaskets to help get big horsepower. There's several ways to get to where you want to be and no one "right" way - but several wrong ways. Pat and Jerry build this stuff all the time and I'm sure they will have some suggestions as to machining but if you have a good engine builder, let him put together a quote for you and see what he comes up with.

I'd put some thought into cooling system to make sure there's enough radiator as high compression motors make a bunch of heat.

As Glenn mentioned, I'd put a lot of thought and planning into the cooling system!!!! Nothing worse then having a big, killer street engine and not being able to run it more then 10 blocks without pegging the temp gauge! It's going to take at least a double pass aluminum radiator with a very tight fitting shroud, outside air directed through the radiator, not around it, and fan(s) of sufficient quality to pull enough CFM through the radiator to cool the water. also a high quality water pump capable of maintaining the necessary pressure and volume of coolant through the engine.

I see you'll be running a manual trans, so at least you won't have all the extra heat of an automatic trans with a high stall converter creating even more heat, good plan there!!!!

Performance has to be a package deal, good engine and driveline, suspension that can handle the power, and braking to bring it back from warp speed!!!!

lol its all in the works. I was quoted around 9300 -9500 with AFR 235 Heads Forged Eagle R/A, Hi rise intake, Dart block, S/R cam with right valve train (don't know specs), 1.6 roller rockers, hardend pushrods, arp head bolts, 950 dp carb, Hei dist, Cand remember the brand water pump but it is electric, AND we are discussing warranty. But I have not made any deals. I wouldn't mind one of your guys building my engine but I just don't know anything about them. But we can always get acquainted :)

I will work out the cooling system later, for now motor then on to the next step. lol Trust me I am not going to put this motor in my car with out all the supporting mods. Besides I still have to paint the car and build a custom rollcage. SO its going to be a good 4-6 month project when I get back.
