Blown 383 Questions

Hi guys I am new to this Forum and I would like to introduce myself first, My names Andrew Moser I live in Maryland. I have a 97 Camaro RS and a 46 Chevy Pickup. I am going to be restoring a 70-73 Camaro and was thinking of using a Weind 142,144,177 blower. I am new to FI. and had a few questions ?

So I started thinking how would a built 383 with 9.5 comp ratio running on 93 octane, with good aluminum heads fair with one of these blowers. Would it be possible to crank the boost up to 7-8pi ? With a good size cam and everything working together would 425-475rwhp be achievable ? Thanks guys and if any one has ran one of these or has an opinion please chime in !

yep i built one some time ago and some with bigger blowers as well with roller cams and crowers flat lifter cams and flat lifter cam holleys power max cam with the smaller blower

I am still thinking about what I want to do. On one hand I love the style of the mini blower but it may be too small for a 383 and not make enough boost. On the other hand I was looking at Vortech and Procharger who make kits for alot more money but you can up the boost. I was wanting to run about 8psi and make 425+hp to the wheels.

had a customer that had the smaller blower on a 502 there not to small but it all in the combination of the build yes what your looking at can be done VERY EZ

You want to keep your compression around 8:1 with a supercharger. 9.5 is too high for a Roots-style blower. With 8:1 you should be able to run 8-9 lbs. of boost but I would make sure to use a boost retard ignition box. A number of companies offer forged blower/turbo pistons for such a build. A 144 worked fine on the 350 I had some years ago, but I would opt for a 177 for a 383.

yes 9.5 is bit hi but can be done i have 8 roots blower engines out there at 9.5 i would back it down some 8.500 to 9.000 yes on the 177 less spinning less heat .same with the CR you start to low to crank up the blower to make up for the low CR some guys just can not get there head round that so you run the blower hard make more heat and beat the engine part there is a fine line but what your shooting for is not hard i would use a good bottom end parts forged parts pistons i use 2618 and 4032 alloy for this build would not matter much i have used hyper as well but i would use forged the 5.7 rod and a dish only comes in a JE not srp other may make it but on the last 383 i did they did not if you go to a 6 rod the part number is 13103 and is 9.8 with 64 cc have to move up on a bigger chamber of head last one i did was a JE and did get what i wanted for cr then pistons are 760.a set

Thanks so much guys I am still saving up lol. But I think I might go with a Procharger or Vortech system because you can run more boost and I wont have to worry about hood clearance (Planning to do a 72 Camaro with 2inch cowl).

So the parts would be:

Crank-Eagle | Forged 4340 | arp mains
Connecting rods | Hbeam with arp rod bolts
Wiseco Forged piston | 8.0 comp ratio
Cam | Custom somewhere like .560 lift
Heads I am lost, I know aluminum but who makes a good set under 1500
Intake | Victor JR
Carb | Also lost I think 750 would be to small ?
Vortech Carb Kit | V-2 10 pounds of boost

I think this should get me my goal and more. Would this engine be reliable something that would last 20+ years while spinning 6000rpms ?

your kidding about the 20 years? when it comes time to buy heads you can P.M me i get Darts for a good price.what wisco piston are you using to get 8.1 with a 3.750 crank ??

Well I'm only going to drive the car during the summer and on the weekends so that's like maybe 20-25 times a year and most of the time I will be driving the car to car shows, 3 track days a year and the occasional street race. So I hope the engine will last fairly long. I just checked Wiseco's online catalog and the lowest comp piston they make is 9-1comp ratio. I looked on JE's catalog and they have a piston with 8.1 comp ratio with a 70cc head. Sounds like a plan about the heads, do you ever get any used sets ?

well it is very hard for a engine to sit my blower engines is about 9 years old and i may pull it for a freshen up. i will pm you on the heads your going have to cut about 010 off the heads to get to 70 cc

Thanks Pat you have been a good help. I should be starting this build this spring so I will be in contact about heads! But overall does this sound like a good strong running build ?

use a scat crank newer block with hyd roller cam can save some money if your going hyd roller
