Not if you have a valve spring compressor. Without it almost impossible.
Don
I can probly borrow/rent one, everyone is telling me to take to a machine shop, I like to do things myself
Nevermind, ill just buy one they arent that badly priced
when you get the spring s off take a file and go over the keeper gooves so if any hi spots you do not cut the guids when pulling the valves out they should go back in the same spot in the head when all cleaned up if using a wire wheel keep away from the 45 on valves and seats .oil valve stems when putting back together there many other things to check i do them every week so it abit more to it then most think they know
Sweet, thanks for the tips, and just so you know im one to research.till it hurts my head and then I decide if I can do it or if I should pay to get it done. Any other tips or things I should look for?
yep there is many .as i take heads apart ..many times they never make it in my shop for a rebuild .i walked out the door and told many there heads were cracked before they made it to the door. so thats the first thing. crack s .they start off the seats and walk out in to the port or chamber most times i can see them. but if not i wet mag them so they can not hide threw this test. guid wear. check springs for good lbs or can be shimed . stem wear . stems tops if flat. looking at 45 that there not beating in or pitted on valve and seat .checking for cuped valves . many other things other then just valves . heads flat ? rockers studs not pulling up or getting cut in .
This is one area where you're time and money ahead letting a good, qualified shop do the work, IMHO. Too many things that experience teaches like Pat says, and done wrong they will make you miserable for a long, long time.
$25 for a local shop to do a tear down and inspection, yup going to the shop, thanks guys
I just did a google...there really is a town called Baraboo.....what a cool name
What are the people who live in Baraboo called Barabooites?
I have had Machine shops Do some cylinder Heads for me in the Past . One set I waited forever for then I had to take them back apart and redo them . Another shop different heads #186's they Cracked about 5 Guides Driving in New Guide inserts and reused valves that they should not have and they Left a few bad studs . Basically they wrecked a set of rebuild-able heads and charged for it ! Sure if Heads are well worn you can only do so much with them at Home . But then it's best to find better castings or New ones . I know Pat says he does great work and maybe he does . But from what I have seen most shops don't .
I also built these Double Hump heads as well at home and they turned out real nice ;)

no tango I never said i do great work...my work speaks for it self for any one to check it or has seen it... my customer say that for me by the fact they keep comming back for more work .i just say on here how i do the work i do .i can not help guy s that do not know how to do there job right there is alot of them just like any other field of work
Yes most Engine work / rebuilding should not be done by Folks who have not worked with others who do know or through school have Learned how to do this work . And yes a worn out set of heads is just that and most of the time it would take hours of Machine Labor to save the castings . Ok EDhurl First Do you have knowledge of how to disassemble an Engine ? If so you can be walked through the how to on marking and Disassembling Cylinder Head's . Any How -> how many Miles are on that Engine ?
Soooo if a guy just came out of a David Vizard class, you wouldn't trust him??.
Well call me foolish, but I do trust in the fact that NOT all O/P's are people without experience.Ya just never know that for sure.
Ed-not that you can't do head work, but more over the machinery to do the work forces the job to be taken to a machine shop. That is the practical logical answer.
Yes on the disassembly, I am very mechanically inclined, a walkthrough would be nice as I havent taken them in yet, no idea on mileage, but from the wear and tear I would say very low or very well taken care of
You know Ed-sometimes it is best to let them tear them down.It lets them inspect them as they where on the engine to might tell them the story about the engine.
Sorry about that Ed.I will do my best to stay ON TOPIC.PM me if you feel the need to.
If you really want to know how to check and rebuild cylinder heads at Home . I can show you . If not find a shop that you think will do good work on them . A lot of the old stuff is to far gone to rebuild at home . When the guides and seats are washed out then you have to send that work out . I can check them kinda quick and know if I can rebuild them at home or not . One Performance shop charged My Friend $140.00 just to take his Heads apart ? Mark stuff heck no ! He got them back in a Few bags I put them back together and they are on a 383 with a Blower now and work great . I did that work for nothing .

Tango, pm sent
Forty yrs in the business.Go ahead to guide him into a re-do flash.Kind of a waste to check work that has to have the use of a machine shop anyways. If your friend paid $140.00 to tear down some heads,He doesn't have a very good shop to begin with because he got took.
LOL- that shade tree ever fell on ya??.
Even with two engine guys helping you . You still cant build an Engine what a waste of 40 Years Ha ! Don't be a Tango Hater because you can't do something Learn how . Or do what Tech told you Buy a Book on it Ha-Ha
Check the ego at the door here. That isn't how it is done here. Now maybe at the other site internet hero's get respect, but here ya earn it.I got more wins in drag racing/built engines than I am very sure you will ever get in your whole entire life.I do think Pat put you in your place once before and your surely silly if you think you can match words or knowledge with me.
Hint-Hint-the build I am doing issssssssssssssss alot different that the 9.90 engines we do and have done.Ya just never know do ya with the newbies(well newbie to you).
Tango-PM sent in a complaint to management by me.Just so you are aware of it.Enough said.We done now.
Hey Ed-I offer the same PM I did before. And filter you advise given.I promise you the on this site Pat and Jerry are the PRO engine builders.
So 1Gary I hurt your Feelings Ha-Ha I give a dame what you think or who you cry to . Like I said your a Tango Hater . Might as well shut down the Engine threads here and Farm out all the work to Shop's ha ? I only tried to help this man to do something that (he) really wants to try . I still am willing to do a set of heads to show him A-Z how to do them . And yes what to Look for and when to stop if needed . But you only bring negativity to this Post . If you don't know about something that Fine maybe you are good at something else Like Painting Help there . You Don't have to Post just for # gain . I have fun Building what I do and yes when I shut the Hood it's good to go for a Long time even being a Flat Tappet Engine build . Internet hero ? Ha-Ha COOL
Speaking of checking your egos buys and girls........Enough is enough, either you can assist the original poster or you cannot. Take the drama and the ego induced bickering offline......

well i think post #6 and #8 cover some of it. that and a motors /chilton book should of worked him thru the job? if not a post by him would of been answered by others or me. hard to know you much help he needed . was he looking for step by step photos of going thru a set of heads ? i do think from time to time some come on here for help that can not be given but i try to help them to
