Was helping my friend assemble his short block,... got the rings set and all on the pistons and installed all 8 jugs. When we finished, there was a ring left laying in the box. Pulled all 8 jugs, all rings accounted for. It had been packaged with 1 extra top ring. Needless to say we were peeved. Rotten rat fink bastages...
Better than one short. :D But I agree, I hate it when you find extra parts in the box when you are done. Makes you hold your breath for a while. Someone on the assembly line was in the Xmas mood. :p

I'll bet you'll lay everything out and count all the pieces before you start from now on!!
yep i lay them out and check each hole for end gap number the ring packs to holes same with bearings i can tell stories about bearings and rings for days and other parts that were screwed up
Being blessed by geezerdom (old age) and accepting that I forget things (I once set down a wrench to answer the phone, then spent the better part of an hour looking for it) I've gotten into the habit of inventorying every part before assembly. For example, a piston gets checked for rings, wrist pins AND locks, a double check to make sure the rods are on correctly and then I oil thepins and rings one more time before slipping the assembly into the block.
Was it, by chance, Total Seal rings? I've had extras with them in ther past also.:D
i wright every thing down in a folder gets check 3 times .i put a marker check on the rods /mains caps after they been tq down and other stuff with a ok . not from old times ? well maybe but have done it this so long a can not remember .but i have walk around the shop looking for something when it was in my hand or pocket

I use the 2 liter 8 soda pop per plastic crate you see in the stores as a organizer.
I label the side of it to represent one side of 2-4-6-8 and the other 1-3-5-7 which is each cylinder of the engine.I do the assembly of piston,piston pin,rings,rod,rod bearings as it would be for each cylinder ready to go in the engine.The hole size I have had 4.060 pistons in them and the piston/rings fit no problem.Because of them being plastic,there isn't a issue of the crate damaging the piston.Best part is if you ask for the crate at your local store,they give them to you for free and I hang them off the wall of my shop for easy storage.

i tape them pair them up and number for holes and put the back in ring boxs . totalseal must have a thing going with hasting as i have had more then one set of hasting were missing a top ring . i had speed pro mark for a upper H rod bearing cut for a lower.seen main bearing s under sizes by 0.0005 in a set .cam bearing O.D under size. pin holes way off on new pistons. name brand heads with holes in the intake runners head bolt holes off intake to ex valve spacing off rockers with bad roller bearings.new rods .cranks screwed up. timing set with run out this all before they get together you have to watch this stuff and a bunch of other fun things...milk crates were the hot deal now there so cheap you can not put any thing heavy in them like a 9inch pig or stand on them any more
