I'm building a 327 (sj) and have a press on balancer. A friend told me "have the crank drilled for that". Is this something that is really necessary? Do they come off at high rpm's? And is that a "normal" service at a machine shop?

Good idea to do it, Bob. Anyone with a good lathe should be able to do it for you. They do come off.
Streets & Dave,
Thanks...done deal. I've gotta say that the thought of the dampner coming off at 7 grand is pretty ugly.....REALLY bad things would happen I'm sure!!!
Thanks guys.....
Radiator $180
water pump $ 65
drive belt $ 13
fan shroud $ 12
tow bill $ 45
hood dent $320
listening to others who have BEEN THERE... priceless!
I had just "pulled" third at 70mph on I-10 in a 67 Camaro.
Grinder.....yup, that's just what I was envisioning....you guys have sold me...it's a done deal.
Hey Mad, isn't experience a great teacher??? Add me to the "been there, done that" list, except it was on a 283 punched to 301!!! Kinda like buy insurance Bob, too late to buy it once the damage is done.
