just dropped a 350 into my '88 cherokee-- trying to figure out exactly what year it is ---
driver side stampings are :
57L GSGI (right next to bellhousing)
GIIH
passenger side stampings are:
14093638
I've google'd this, and come up with everyting from an lt-1, to a 350 with no data--- any ideas what this motor put out in stokc form?
The two numbers most SBC afficionados go by are the one that is cast on the bellhousing, driver's side (you can see it looking down on the bell from above) and the stamped number on the block deck just in front of the passenger side cylinder head. It will probably be hidden by the alternator or other accessory.Quote:

I googled the number on the passenger side, and I also get varried info-- some sites say it is from an 87-92 truck, others say it is from an 87-88 camero (which would make it an L98 motor).
I'll also add that valve covers on this motor have the bolts in the middle (as opposed to around the edges), which is also consistent with an L98.
14093638 is a 350 that was produced from late 1986 to 1994 for installation in 1987-1995 Chevy production models. It's a "vanilla" casting and was used for both 2 and 4 mains, roller or flat tappet cam. It will have a one-piece rear seal.
I have the 4 bolt main.
Based on the info above, any idea what the hp/tq range was for this motor in stock trim? I've seen numbers between 220-245HP, 320-340 TQ.

Probably a dependable engine for your Jeep. In the event you wanted a mild performance increase, you could add some headers and an after market intake and carb (if your state law allow such). Big gains would require big dollars as the block and crank would be the only things you keep and work up from there.
You didn't say what you're after - but for a good daily driver, with a set of headers and some free flowing 2-1/4" exhaust, it would probably prove to be a great rig.
