I forgots about the partial vin, There may be a hole vin somewhere on the block but I do not know where it would be. The vin would be the key to it's identity. run the castings through mortec, link in techinspector's 1'st post, they sometimes tell what the motor is, in your case anything's worth a shot.
I don't belive cams are numbered but the crank has a casting, this may be unique to a vette as the motors varied between the Daily driver cars ( bel-air and others in catagory )and the Vette.Quote:

and picked up a data base from the nation corvette museum. Here is what it looks like. This motor, if I am looking at this right, has the correct numbers to be a CS suffix, 1960 283 with 290 HP and the FI option. then heads were changed at some point to later higher performance heads (327) Check it out. See if I am onto something here. Anyway, I really would like to confirm this through another source. Now...if this is true....what is it worth? I really would like to change the motor in the care for something else anyway...would be nice to offset some expense.
says there were 759 units with the registered product option #579D which is the 290 hp engine that looks like it has FI. the only thing that is strange is that under induction in a different page, they have 290 HP motor with a rochester listed as well as the FI, but under the registered product options, they have the 290 HP engine listed only as FI and not with a Rochester. ??
ya deffinetly found the info at the PERFECT place. I would say to a rodder the motor is worth zip, they would'nt buy it but, to a restorer in a rebuilt and running and good visual condition it would probobly go for 4 -5 grand. the fuel injection is hard to find in a 283, they were most commonly found in 327's. The least I would let the engine go for is 3 grand if it's rebuilt and painted factory colors.

This lists the CS as the 290 and only the FI option with the 290 hp as well. I think I have pretty well nailed it down....(smiles). OK who wants it? (smiles)
I am hearing from the vette guys on the other forums that this is indeed a fuelie engine. I think this is so cool! One of the guys on the other forum suggested trying to use the partial VIN to track down any potential current owner of the car (if it still exists). Would that just smoke his brain..."Hey, I have your original engine." Anyone have an idea how to do that?

and looking at the VINs here...I bet the 107596 is the last digits of the sequence, since the remaining numbers are the same. So the VIN is 008675107596...right?
Buzz, The correct serial number is 00867S107596. The "S" stood for St. Louis the plant of origin. 00867 was Chevy's model number in this case Corvette. The 1 was in all VINs and 07596 was sequence number. Since I believe Chevy only stamped Corvette VINs in blocks at this time It is fairly safe to say this is a vette block. What state did this come from? Was i there long? Chances are it is from the area where the car came from. Eric W. Jackson
