350 starter problems

Wasup guys. My starter went out so I got a new one from autozone and put it
on and at first I had the small wire on the wrong screw on the silenoid and it didn`t say anything. So I unscrewed it and in the process I touched the big bolt that goes to the battery a couple times and it sparked up a little. So I disconnected the positve cable and then cont
Continued to unscrew the nut for the small wire so I can put it on the right bolt. So I did that and it crunk up on the first try but after that it won't crank it just made kind of a loud funny sound. So I checked to see if the positive wire was touching the small wire which is on the same bolt the big bolt and maybe they were touching a little to much to so I straightened that out. So I'm trying to figure out whether I burned the starter out that
Quick when it sparked up a little or could it just be a bad starter. This is my first time putting on a starter.

Take it back to Autozone and have them check it on their tester. Either you got a bad one (was it rebuilt or new?) or your little screwup in wiring damaged it. I wouldn't have a lengthy discussion about the wiring thing, just tell them it didn't work and see what they find out.

When you are doing the next one, disconnect the starter positive cable right at the battery until you are done.

Ya I definitely won't tell them what I did. I'm just going to tell them to give me anew one.this time should be a little easier for me. My mechanic says that its a lot of bad starters going around. But if that little incident did mess it up I guess its all apart of learning. Thanks

I have had very bad luck with rebuilt starters and alternators. Now I buy new ones only.

Autozone parts have a lifetime warranty... And you'll need it.

We very rareley get a come back using NAPA rebuilts.

Guys check this out. It may have not been the starter at all the battery was low and doesn't seem like the alternator is charging. But I guess I just new that the battery should be charged that I didn't think this could be it. Couldn't get the alternator tested yet autozones machine wasn't working. But I put a screwdriver at the back of the alternator while the car running and I got no magnetic draw to it. Isn't this sort of a test to see if it is charging?

Roger that on NAPA – I think that even though franchised, there is a lot of local control with ownership. I purchased a NAPA rebuilt alternator for a Ford van we had years ago. I took the old one in for the exchange as I bought the rebuild to avoid core charge. When we went to exchange the box, the guy behind the counter about had a stroke as the “rebuild” looked like it had not been thoroughly cleaned. The case was spray painted an aluminum color and the terminals were obviously not new. He apologized profusely and asked me to, “wait a few minutes as he would make this right.”

After about fifteen minutes, he came back to the counter with a brand new Autolite part and handed it to me – for the same price. I later found out that they (NAPA) had experienced some problems with a local rebuild shop that they had been using. This guy had jumped in his truck and gone over to the Ford dealer and bought an alternator for me. I know that they probably had some kind of arrangement with all the local dealers, but this was certainly above and beyond.

I’ve moved since, but still like to support the local NAPA dealer where at all possible, i.e., alternators, starters, water pump, etc. I bought the rack for my project car’s steering from local NAPA and they were competitive with Internet pricing – cheaper if one factors the shipping.

I know this sounds a bit like a NAPA commercial and I didn’t intend to hijack this thread – but I am a firm believer in taking care of the local guys and gals who work hard to take care of me!

Well problem solved the alternator was bad. Slapped the new alternator on and its fine. Now why didn't I check the batt. At first to see if that was the problem. U live and u learn.
