i havent looked yet, but to confirm my CHH small block i need to remove valve cover(is that another name for rocker cover) to get the cylinder head numbers to find ou if i have a 350 or the 307.......
so how easy is it to remove this so i can see the number castings?

As you look at the engine from the front, the two covers, one on either side about 6 inches from the carburetor, are each held on with four small bolts. remove them and the head casting number will be visible.
Be sure to use new gaskets when replacing the covers.:toocool:

hi, CHH, yes thats the engine number i had on the log book and what the seller told me it was, i had a quick glance and thought yes thats about right but when we couldnt find a matching suffix number i decieded to get the brillow pad out and sand down the last 3 digits to make sure
sure enough it read CHH....
so for the time the engine has been in its had the wrong engine number on the log book so now im going to have to write to dvla to get it all changed properly....
sorry for the confusion....but thats what the logbook said it was so not having the experience with chevy and suffix number i thought it would of been right
The heads could have been swapped at some point in it's life.
Look for the block casting number at the rear of the engine on driver's side (car's left).
It should be a familiar number like this;

besides ive narrowed it down to a 350 or 307.
if the motor has 350 heads on, no matter what the number is (year 350 was made) i will know its a 350 as you aint gunna get a 350 head on a 307 surley?
5.7 litre heads on a 5 litre? i hope it cant be done anyway lol
Yes it can be done.Small intake valve 350 heads work on a 307 or 305.
Not all 350 heads had the larger 1.94 intake valves.
I read your other thread about what a slow pig this thing is.
Regardless whether it's a 307 or 350, it can be tuned to run well as long as the internals are in good shape such as a good timing chain, good valve springs, good distributor, good camshaft with no flat lobes, etc.
It would help to get that casting number off of the back using a mirror to know where to start the correct tune on this thing.

Is it safe to assume its a 350 now?
If so what is the 1st mod i should buy? I missed out on a intake wiesser 8009 or sumthing like that on ebay other day.
It already has 4 barrel edelbrock 600 cfm carb
Thats onli mod far as iknow. Bolted to that is a 1inch filter. Should i get a proper 4" if it wil fit under hood?
have you checked the exhaust sys. catalytic converters love to plug and cause a power problem just another thought .....ted

First, throw a timing light on it and see where you stand. Report back. Pull the plugs, get the number off of them and report back. Look at the "burn" end of the plugs, take pictures, report back.
Be ready to pull that edelbrock carb off and get ready the go through it correctly or pitch it in the trash.
Start at these points first and the it can be tuned properly to give you some tire spin and start fine tuning all the components that make the whole thing happy.
