Edelbrock 1406 (electric choke) is a good bolt on for SBC. I've used them on 305/350/400 in stock to modified and they perform well. I have found they run a bit rich and may require a re-jet but they are very easy to re-jet.

For a street/mild performance carb the Edelbrock 1405 (manual choke) or 1406 is the only way to go. Get a rod and jet kit follow the instructions in the manual and you'll have a carb that runs right, not rich, won't stumble or lag when you put your foot in it, gives good gas mileage and STAYS in tune through all seasons.
To me Holleys are too tempermental hard to keep in tune let alone expensive to tune
It is really each to their own--just like some guys wouldn't be caught driving a Chevy others a Ford;)
Summit Racing sells the Edelbrock 1406 for $285, The Holley 4106 for $275 and a re-manufactured QuadraJet (750cfm) for $269.
Price really is not an issue - All work well and all have their advantages (and quirks).
The QJ sounds really great when the secondaries open and Chevy has used the 750 QJ on everything from a 305 to a 454.
The Holley has been the racer's choice for a long time.
The Edelbrock is really simple to tune with a very complete range of valves and jets.
It comes down to what you want to run.
Kind of like, "which stereo is the best? Sony? Kenwood? JVC?, Bose?"
Well thats part of my problem I have never ran anything but a quad. so I havent given anything else a chance and also never built anything but a stock motor so just wanted to hear from the pros.
