355 oil question

alright, im in the process of retro fitting my 355 into my 1993 nissan 240sx.. i know.. i know.. im stupid.. anyway im doing it,

my situation is,

i dont have alot of room for the oil pan, i'm going to be modifying a racing pan to fit, but, could i use a 2 qt oil filter and then a lower capacity oil pan?

i know i need at least 5qt total for the motor, so i started thinking..
usually its 4qt in the pan plus 1qt in the filter,

i know there are 2qt filters, so could i use
3 qts in the pan and 2qts in the filter?

that would make fitting things in there so much easier.

if it matters, its going to be pushing about 350hp/350torque naturally aspirated around 9.5-10.0 compression.

please let me know what you guys think.

how much oil do i need?
can i use the 2qt filter and a smaller pan?
or do i need to use a 1 qt filter and at least a 4 qt pan

step up put a dry sump on it ...ted

I don't see where the extra quart in the filter is going to do a lot of good----You need sufficient capacity in the oil pan so that you do not run out of oil at the oil pickup. It's got to have enough so that the pump can still pick up oil when accelerating, braking, and cornering.... Do you have room on the sides of the pan to allow for a kickout on one or both sides????

ahh... i dont know much about the dry sump, and from what i do know its VERY expensive.. im moderately budget limited, i want to do everything right, but if i can save money, i'd like to

can i use the 2qt filter without causing damage to the engine or sacrificing TOO much performance? (a few HP is no big deal)

yeah its kicked out on both sides, i can make it fit w/o using the 2qt filter, it would just be even easier with the 2qt filter.

the bigger filter will added more oil but will not do any more if the oil pump sucks air if you have a HV oil pump this will added to your oil problem you can add to your oil pan thats the best way $$ .dry sump parts can be pick up on ebay so it would not be cheap but would be better then buying every thing new

well i do have a high volume pump.. so i guess i wont be going the 2qt filter route,

i have room to make a pan that will hold around 4.25qts, i just wanted to see if i could make it smaller, the smaller the better when stuffing a v8 into a 4cyl car.

i may still use a 2qt filter to total over 6qts in the end, so i have plenty of oil.

would this allow me to run a 1.5 less qt capacity pan?

say about a 3qt pan, plus 1.5 in the accumulator making 4.5 plus 1 in the filter should be enough but are there any problems with this set up?

It would help... I'd still go for the extra effort of adding some sort of sump to ensure the oil pickup doesn't suck air..... I've used an accumulator, mostly in circle track and road race cars.... Nothing is as good as having the proper capacity in the pan..... Modifying the pan IMO is a lot cheaper and better then adding an accumulator....

yes you can do anything but you need to have oil in the pan so the oil pump can pump it. you suck air your all done ...oil needs to be in the pan a accumulator is a stopgap from burning the crank out of the engine when things are not going the way they should i would not think i would use one for short comings in the capacity of the oil pan
