350 idles great!

i have a350 chevy that i rebuilt 12 or so years ago. it has had the same problem for years and i just keep parking the truck out of the way. the motor idles great. but flutters at high rpm. it wont even drive. when i try it just overheats and dies. i have reset the valves set timing and replaced everything except the quadrajet. what is my problem? i just took it to a mechanic and he set timing adjusted valves and it idles great. but thats it. he thinks that i didnt align the cam gears correctly. could this be it?

A quick test with a vacuum gauge will tell you.

A stock cam engine in good condition will idle 17"-19" vacuum.

With the cam a tooth or two off, vacuum levels will be about 15" vacuum.

its an rv cam.

Pick up the vacuum reading anywhere on the manifold..NOT on the carb...You could also have a fuel starvation issue

i switched carbs.... samw problems with both carbs

cody did you check the exaust sys to see if is restricted especialy if it has a cat. converter .....ted

should start it up today.
pulled timing cover and found a second set of dots. key way on crank was at 12 oclock position on first set and i moved it over to 2 oclock on the other dot. does this sound correct? thanks cody
