283 questions
This one is out of a 58 brookwood. It came with the 3 on the tree. I want to put a turbo 350 on it, and I am curious what flexplate, and starter to use. Also does anyone have a part # for a two pulley balencer for the 283. It came on the 4x4 and parts store guys are stupid.
Oh yeah, and it has a two barrel carb on it, and they said the intake manifold gaskets were different?!
I have searched and 350 and 283 are too short to search!?
Oh yeah, and here's a pic!

a few things, the 283 never came with a balancer/pulley they are seperate as least every one ive seen is. i have a 283 balancer if you need one? also the intake gaskets are smaller then a typical 350. but a felpro 1204 should work also i have a 2 groove crank pulley haha. a pulley off a 350 should bolt right up to the 283 balancer. also dont be alarmed if you dont find a bolt holding the balancer on, 283's were press on balancers. just find a 153 tooth flexplate and a 153 tooth compatiable starter and go from there on your t-350 conversion. if you cant get an oem replacement flexplate from napa or one form a junkyard jegs has 153 tooth ones for i belive 59-69 bucks?

This starter bolted on different than the normal small block starters. It had 3 or 4 bolts holding it in horizontally where the normal one has two bolts that go in vertically.

You have a problem there. The '58 block won't have the holes for the T350 starter, and the old style can't be adapted to it. I think you're stuck with finding an iron Powerglide if you want to keep the old engine. Or adapt a T5 and learn to love shifting!

If I remember correctly, I read on another forum that you can drill the block to accept a later style starter. Check to see if there is enough space on your block to drill and thread the two holes.
