Anyone priced a BDS supercharger for a LS? Shocker!!! Ouch!!

Finally got the guys at BDS to give me a price for the (unpolished) no frills 8-71 for my LS1/LS6. $7200. Ouch. I mean come on guys....$3400 for just the manifold....is R&D really that high? I've sent Dyer, Weiand (Holley), and a few others emails asking if they have any plans to do the same. I'll let everyone know what I find. I went with the LS for two things initially.....want to polish it for the show and shine....and fuel economy. The latter I decided doesnt matter that much to me now.....just too interested in the idea of a supercharger now. :LOL:

I've seen guys make their own sheet intakes.....anyone up to designing a manifold? :LOL:

In the end.....bet I ditch the LS. :CRY:

Ha ha. Me too. Lets see...LS7 crate $17,500. Want to bet on $22,000 +? Sure would be nice though. You need one of those Ken! Sure would look slick in a Deuce! :D

I have dealt with BDS for years. It's really tough, and like you said expensive. The problem is they have what you want. Craig has a knack for fast stuff, I just wish there customer service was a little better.
I'll get a price on a ZR1 Monday just for the heck of it.

I keep looking at the conversion they offer on Hillborn injection from mechanical to EFI---being an old sprint car dude I like the idea of those 8 big stacks up in front of me!!!!!

I looked on there site and couldn't find a kit for the conversion. I bought a old set of 1 1/2 Hilborn injectors for my truck and want to convert them to EFI. Do you know the part no. or am I just blind :confused:

I don't even see it on there anymore, Ken.... Used to be, a Hillborn with Bosch electronic injectors and a ecm.... Maybe they aren't offering it anymore... Had a pic of it on my old computer before it crashed....gone forever now I guess.

Take the Weiand or Edelbrock alum manifold and weld a plate on it like Dyer used to do years ago----

On the Hilborm stack fi have you looked at the Hilborn electronic stack stuff?? have used two of them on BBC engines---pics in my gallery on ClubCobra---sister site of this one

Thanks Jerry, got to go look at that.... I do have a "swap meet special" set of Hilborn's for a Windsor, sure would like to use them on something... Maybe there's another roadster in my future????

I'm trying to find out if they'll sell the manifold by itself....and how much. Surely they can beat $3400. :confused:

If I do a roadster, it will be an aluminum body built right here in my little shed..... Got some ideas, nothing firm yet... Still have a bunch of other stuff to get finished up first.....

I've been looking for the last few days and taking your thoughts in mind....Edelbrock is now making a dual quad (Air Gap) intake for the LS1.

I'm thinking I'll go that route. Thanks so much for the help. I've been agonizing over how I would use the Air Gap intake....incorporating it into a blower manifold. I know I can have the top machined....with the drive assembly in-line with the crank....feel fairly comfortable with that. But I'm worried about not having the correct height for the plenum. You know....at the best height/ to angle of runners. I'm fairly sure that if I have the bottom placed to high or too low will have an extremely negative affect on low end torque...etc. etc. I'm still thinking. Maybe......cut the intake runners off where they enter the base plenum....fabricate a box (3/16 T6061)....and go from there. Also have to allow for pressure relief valve. I would just build a box around the entire existing product....but there is a gap in between the two carb mounts....that void would need filled on the bottom and top.....and then opened up into one (dual) hole. Man....you guys have any more thoughts? Know anyone on here that specializes with blowers....or maybe has fabricated something odd like this? :eek:

Even if I dont go with the blower I'll still have a pair of carbs sitting on top.

I know everyone has their own favorite carb set-ups....so I wont start a new thread on it.....but do you guys have any dual quad set-ups you favor? I use to be able to tune a 650 Holley vacuum secondary like no-ones business....but its been soo long since I've messed with them. I know there is a difference in the way a blower carb and a none-blown set-up.....kind of looking at the demon dual set-up. I think its time for me to dig out my blower books and carb books...LOL's. I'm starting to get confused. Oh...did I say...starting to get confused. I'm always confused. Too many things floating in me brain! LOL's.

You don't need to join the area where the two carbs go---just machine the manifold flat and build a plate that matches the blower base with 2 holes for where the carbs would have been---the phlemem area does need anything---if you are concerned you could put a divider left/right side ---the blower turns outwards so would work--the least amount the manifold is divided the better it will work

need more low end torque push the pedal down further

Have you looked at MagnaCharger? Here's one for GM Trucks and SUVs
and for a CTS-V. It has a jack shaft drive so intake is on the front. This one has an intercooler.

I have seen them on a number of conversion cars and Corvettes too. 500 RWHP is very realistic and still streetable and gets decent gas mileage.

Thanks Pat. I have seen them and concidered them. Still pricey but its still a possibility. I'd have to go with the truck version....air intake offset to right...for more clearance. And cheaper than the vette version. Thanks for the reminder. With the myriad of saved email (I send myself emails with links to sites of interest) I nearly forgot the Magnusson. :D

Pat, totally unrelated, and I will start a thread...but...what do you use for a transmission cooler for the 4L? I bought a pair of 18" heat sink style hoping they would work. Know of anyone that is using these versus the fin/tube style?

EDIT: I think I found my answer with a search....found one of your replys. I'll be using a pair of dual pass 18" (similar to the Moroso unit) heat sink style from Jegs. I hope it will be enough. I really didnt want to find out later down the road it wasnt suffient enough and have to mess up my perty painted frame to mount a fin/tube/fan style unit. I believe I'll invest in a mechanical gauge to place on the outlet at the transmission somewhere. Take a trip...in the heat....locked up.....stop....and crawl underneath to check my temp. Do you trust the electronic gauges for trans temps?

From the picture of the air gap I found....it just looked as if the area between the two carbs was totally open....not part of the plenum?? That why I was wondering what to do with it. Am I wrong? I havent seen one in person. Just wondering.

Dave, I am using one of those 18" double pass heat sink coolers and a Derale deep pan with the cooling tubes running through it. Seems to work pretty well. I don't have a temp gauge to verify though.

My wife won't let me buy toys like blowers. She doesn't like the sound of them.:eek: :CRY: But I have heard some good things about Hampton Blowers; might be worth looking into. Their prices seem a little better than some of the ones you have been seeing.

I agree Bob. I have been planning on giving Don a call....just havent had time yet. I did send an email....but I'm told he prefers calls....so call I will.

By the way....nearly have the C4 rear ready. I said I wouldnt do it again but....now that I think I know what I'm doing....I believe I will do it again depending on what results I end up with as far as handling and driveability. I wish I had a little more fender (downfall to open fenders) for suspension travel. Hope 2.5" of jounce will be enough. :confused: It may ride like an old mule first trip out....may have to stiffen it up and live with it. :D

Oh...and by the way everone.....I am not knocking BDS's product!! I shouldve said that up front. I know that they have a great product...I was just hoping for a better price. I know the old adage.....you pay if you want to play.
