water water everywhere
Took my mud truck to yhe thack this weekend and noticed a little smoke when I unloaded from trailer (smoke from left exhaust). Thought it was probably a valve and would check it later. Moved truck about 200 yds to the pits and it was smoking like a stove pipe--white smoke from both sides. Came home and pulled heads, drained oil and had water everywhere. Both heads checked out good. Could this have come from the intake gasket ? I did run it hot (210) last time out but has been driven on the street since w/o problems I thought. Please help. 400sbc, vortec heads, air gap intake

I'm no mechanic nor do I claim to be, I had a 41-ply original 6cyl I lost oil pressure. When I drained the oil it was full of antifreeze. I had the head checked it was ok; the machinist shaved the head to true it. I couldn’t get a new gasket so I used the old one. Still got antifreeze in the cylinders. If I would have been able to get a new gasket I think it would have been ok, but I just sold it as with a bad motor.

Also had water on both sides on pistons. Most was on 3/5 and 4/6 with some on #7 cylinder. As there are no bolts in middle of the vortec intake I wonder if gasket may have just blown? The gasket used does not appear to be as thick as the ones specified for this application.

Do the heads have steam holes in them?

No NTFDAY ths did not. Install forget to drill them when I NOTICED this today. But they DO now.

I don't know if for sure that was your problem, but it sure didn't help. It might be time to pull the pan and check the rods and mains. I'm no engine builder and I'm sure if Eric Erikson sees this thread he'll have better answers.

Thought about that just have not had time yet. I do appreciate your input as I am not a builder or much of a mechanic. Just trying to learn so I can keep these trucks running on weekends.

Is it possible for the block to crack before the heads?

Just wanted to thank you all for the great amount of info and knowledge available here. My problem turned out to be blown head gaskets. The info and tech advise here gave me the courage to tackle this and change the cam myself. Knowing you were on hand for advise made this a learning experience instead of having to pay someone else to do it for me. My mud bog truck runs great and pulls the required amount of vacuum now. Thanks to all for your vast amount of knowledge and willingness to help. Keith
