First thing you need to check if that engine will bolt into the car you want to use it in . I do know a Lot of the early SB Chevys did not have all the bolt hole bosses on the sides . And the heads have no bolt holes in the front . But if you can use it and it turns . Go $350 with all the stuff . Or $250 for just the long block . If you do not need the Bell housing and trans . If you have to buy all that stuff . You should be able sell what you don't want on Line . See what the guy says :)
The value in a engine like that is in the numbers matching restore end of it ,if you just want a engine for power ,i would skip the motor that has set for 15 years ,basically at this point ,its little more than parts that have to be disassembled ...all new gasketts ,possible machine work ...etc.
Just because it ran when pulled 15 years ago ,only means there is no holes in the pistons or block....its more than likely froze solid and will need the bores cleaned up at a minimal.............Imho
For a restoration - and to go into a '57 Chebbie, and all the numbers match, it might be worth picking up but will still need to be torn down for inspection and new gaskets/seals at a minimum. Or it might need a complete overhaul, including valves and pistons, a crank grind, etc. Then you are talking the price of a NEW crate motor. For a street rod/machine - there are better Chebbie choices:eek:
, i would say about 250-300 for all of it. much in line with what tango said. ......man machine work must be outrageous everywhere in the country but here
Depends on how it was stored. If it turns over and the valves all work it should be in as good of shape that it was when it was pulled. Which begs the question, if it was really good, why did they pull it? Not many people chuck a perfectly good engine, especially not a small block.
people chuck 283's all the time, that why ive gotten 5 of them for free ! :D
The 1965 to 67 283s Have the better rods . I would build a 283 +60 over Before building a 305 . But Lots of times . We build what we have .
cant argue with free :D
You have that right . I Like helping guys to clean out there garage . You can't beat the price on that free stuff . COOLQuote:

Two things here. This price is probably a good one because of the availability of 283's being shunned for fat chics but a 57 might bring a few more muchachos because of the year.Don't be so quick to sell it.Quote:

57's blocks arent that special unless its a fuelie motor. they are harder to use due to no side mounts unless you run a motor plate. and yes, when they do sing across the line instead of lugging nothing sounds like it!!!
IMO about the best thing it could be used for is to make a resto (boring) '57 have a bunch of correct parts under the hood... The one good thing I remember about the old pin mounts in the front is that they do leave a lot of room for some creative header work!!!!
that is one advantage :D would sure help in my nova theres no room in these things! :D
