With the engine out,it's easy to pull the manifolds and listen for hissing past the valves while it's cranking. A small hose held to the ear is a big help here.You can also look in the ports and see how much crud is on the valves. If the pressure is going into the crankcase, it's time for rings.

Looks like I spoke too soon, I have a considerable doubt this site will ever recover and I don't think those in charge just don't give a damn, prove me wrong.
