how to build a good street 355?
Hey guys, first of all i am glad to be back on line, after slightly loosing my mind and the rest of my hair not being able to log on!its nice to be home.Well i picked up this 1985 350 .030 over that was all torn down.what i would like to know is whats a good cheap way to build this engine for under $2000?and does anyone have any set-ups that they have used for generating the most hp?like cam/carb/stall things i dont really know about just yet,any ideas. Its going in a 49 plymouth coupe with a 76 camaro th350 maybe the whole drive train and sub frame if i can figure it all out.ill post pics thanks,49

Afew years back i rebuilt my 350 and TH350 i had in my 1982 Z28 camaro and I ordered everything from these guys at a fair price.
HP 350KH 350 rebuild kit .030 over with a Crane enegizer cam package 272duration .454 lift is what i picked. but i had stuff laying around to that i had used like a Ededlbrock victor Jr intake i got from a swap meet and i used a 600cfm edelbrock manual choke carb that was already on the car before and 1 5/8" hedders. as far as the tranny i got the #K3500F-R TH350 rebuild kit with a B&M shifter improver kit (shift kit) #30262 and i used a B&M torkmaster 2400 stall converter #20404
After it was all done and i got it running for the first time it was really snappy and responsive it was no slouch it burned them P275/60R15's like nothin with posiDerek Doble

Just buy a crate engine, add a decent intake, bolt the whole thing in and drive. Can't begin to build an engine with all new parts for the price of a crate engine. Think the GM's start at about $1300.00Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

First pick up a set of assembled World S/R Torquer . Part #042660-1 they are 67cc with 170cc intake runners and have 202in/160ex valves and screw in studs . Next for a Camshaft go with . The Comp Cams XE262H this cam is 218/224 dur with 462/469 lift and a 110 lobe sep . Also run a Cloyes true roller timing chain set . And a Melling Z-28 oil pump#M99HVS with a HD shaft . You will also need a rings and bearings kit with gaskets . Run the .041 head gasket . For the intake go with the Weiand #8004 Dual plane . And for the Carb the Edelbrock Performer 600CFM . Then for a distributor go with the Accel HEI #59107C . This set up will be with in your budget . And be a great street engine with every bit of 350 HP and over 400lbs of Torque . And will work with a 308 to 373 gear . If your looking for more HP . up the Cam to the XE268H . And run a 373 to 411 gear . But for a street car the XE262H will be more friendly . COOL

the 49 is all original i thought about using the rear end the th350 and puting a mouse in it instead of the flat head so what ever is stock in a 76 camaro except it has a 6 cyl in it so probably need a torqe converter??? dont think ill clip it either i guess what ive read about early plymouths IFS, it wouldnt be needed at this point !although tangos got the idea!!!

Use the rear end from the 6cyl 1976 Camaro . It's a 8.5 10)bolt being from a 6cyl car it should have the 308 gear . You can pickup a 2800 stall like this budget Converter . And later you can up the gear on that 10 bolt . Or look at your local junk yards or Craigs list for a 1977 to 1980 Z-28 or T/A drum to drum rear end . The Z-28s had 3.42-373 and the T/As had 308-323 most Posi . I have picked them up as low as $200 bucks . COOL

I have built a few cars that started out with 308 rear gears . I just went easy on the camshaft size and they ran strong . That XE262H will be OK with the 2800 stall and the 308 . And later on if you find a 342/373 it will work even better . COOL
Welcome to CHR. I think that you need to hook up your vacuum advance. At part throttle when cruising you have less air and fuel in each cylinder, and the air-fuel mixture is not as densely packed...
