I am wondering if anyone has delt with putting late ninetys vortec 305's in older cars? It's a 98 305 going in to a 72 El Camino, didn't come with a fuel pump. My old fuel pump rod doesn't fit up to the cam, the hole is tapered. Anybody have any experiance in how to fix? Probably electric but I would sure love to stay mechanical. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks.
Probability is that the cam doesn't have a fuel pump eccentric on it....therefore the tapered hole.
Electric is somewhat easier. A mechanical is usually cheaper but with today's evaporating fuel, you might want an electric. You'd probably have to change cam's like nitro said to run the fuel pump rod and then enlarge the hole to have the rod fit.
Can't speak for certain about the Vortecs, but I have 2 earlier TBI blocks and niether one is drilled or cored for a pump rod. The pump mounting pads are finished, though.
What I am not sure about is the 72 El Camino I put it in has two lines, some kind of return line or something. Are there fuel pumps that insert right into the stock system on the El Camino?
Just mount a Carter or Holley electric pump back near the tank.
You can plug the return line(preferably at the tank) as it wouldn't be needed unless you run a bypass type regulator.
Also, make sure you have a vented gas cap.
