HEI/ Oil pump
Hey guys,
Does the chevy HEI unit have a rod that sits in the block to spin the oil pump? I found an HEI unit at the scrap yard, but I'm not sure if I need anything else.
The Pontiac engine I took out of the car had a rod that connected to the gear at the bottom of the distributor shaft that then reached down to the oil pump (I assume). Does chevy use one also? Or does the gear on the distributor unit itself connect to the oil pump?
Any help much appreciated.

You need one like this...

This one is nice because it has a sleeve welded to it to keep the rod in place on the pump, unlike the plastic sleeve that is prone to breaking.

Damn! I was hoping not. I'm already so over my budget- every $$ counts at this point. Oh well.
Thanks for the info guys and the link.

It's a remanufactured Chevy short block that I'm putting in a Firebird. I started the project 5 years ago, then got side tracked. It's hard to remeber exactly what parts I have are Chevy and what's from the Pontiac, how they went together, all that good stuff. heh
