I have a mid-sixties 327 that I'm slowly building on my engine stand. It has a big hole next to the distributor hole. I understand this was for the road draft tube but my question is what do I do with it now? Can I plug the hole? I want to drop the engine into a 78 Elcamino and I'm pretty sure a road draft tube wasn't used in 1978. What would you guys suggest?
A 1968 engine probably had a PCV valve in that hole. A sheet metal, domed cap had a through-bolt to hold it, and a smaller tube to hold the valve. The vented filler cap on the other end of the manifold completes the system.
While I agree with Pope that it's a good spot for the PCV I have also seen them plugged with a "freeze plug". The hose fitting referred to is somewhat difficult to come by (I'd like to find one right now in fact), but a correctly sized "rubber" grommet could be used too.
i have a few of those bob, your talking about the brass deal with the outlet for the hose?
Here's a pic of one Scoot. This is one that someone reefed a bit too much and has distorted it. These were used on 283 and 327 of late '60s.
Thanks to all for your responses. I picked up a 1.25" freeze plug and tapped it in tight. Very easy and I probably wouldn't have thought of it. Thanks.
You do have one in your valve cover?
