It breathes!

Well, it looks like I got lucky and had a good cam break-in.:3dSMILE: Lunati suggested something a little different that I hadn't run across before. After the 20-25 min. at 2000+ rpm they said to add 500 rpm for one min. and keep doing this until 3500 rpm, then work downward to 1000 rpm in the same way.
Anyone done it this way before? It worked out okay but got a little hot towards the end.Topped out at 220* on temp. gauge.
Will take first drive in the morning but set timing and idle and feels pretty punchy- but without a load so far. But just wondered if anybody had seen this break-in from Lunati before?

Brian, that happens to be old school, and it's cool. You can't be overly cautious when flat tappet break-in is going on .Yeah we used to do it just like that when we only had those things to run. Good job.

:3dSMILE: All right, then. Learn something new everyday! Just never heard about that stepping down on the rpm's but does seem to have a certain logic to it. Well, it's about time to go pay for all my goodies now so it's off on my first leg of the road break-in:LOL: Hope it responds on the road like it did in the drive- I might just tickle myself silly over it. Okay, drove to work and back yesterday and seems to run pretty good but have a small popping out the exhaust- not sure if it's carb or?. Timing is at
18* initial and tops out at 32* at 3000-3200 rpm. Am going to put new dizzy in that has adjustable vac. advance and see what can come up with then. Could the popping be an exhaust valve a little tight? Appriciate any advice on what direction to to go at this from here.Thanks to you all on this sight I'm getting good lessons on how to do alot of stuff on my own::LOL:

Popping on decelleration? or accelleration, or cruising speeds?

Popping on deceleration is often an exhaust leak. Air is getting pulled in and igniting with any raw fuel in the exhaust pipes. 18 degrees initial timing seems like a lot. Hopefully your new distributor will give you better control there.

Well, it seems pretty smooth on acceleration, seems to be more at idle and holding steady that I notice the popping. Not real loud like a backfire but enough that I can hear it through the exhaust. Will see what I've got after changing the dizzy this weekend. Thanks for your input. Will be back with more later,

I would make sure you don't have a valve that is to tight.

:3dSMILE: Got the new dizzy in and now my initial timing is at 16* and all in 36* by 3000rpm's. Seems to like it pretty good and starts with just a crank or two. Went through the rocker arms again and the popping seems to have stopped now.
Got the idle set- 900-950rpm in park and 600-650 in gear with a vacuum reading just a hair under 15 in. I believe I'll leave well enough alone for now and see how it goes for a few days. Thanks for pitching in your thoughts and ideas:D
