No, it's an Oldsmobile motor, nothing like a SBC. I quit buying Olds when they showed up on the show room floor with Chevy small blocks in 1978.
As Duane said "it's an Olds engine" and that alone makes it a whole lot better than a sbc. Parts are still readily available. After 78 they were just run of the mill GM engines, nothing notable.
Thanks, I know it seems obvious, but I have never dealt with Olds stuff, other than I know it was a GM product. When he said it was a 350, I wondered if it was the same as Chevy. I was thinking of grafting this engine trans combo into a powerless 56 Chevy I have.
Hey, that would work and you can build the Olds 350 into a screamer. Mondello and a lot of other make great performance part for them and you'd have an old style gasser. An Olds in a Chebby.
Grab it. A '70 still had good compression and minimal smog stuff. You can get some hop up and dress up stuff for it too. You won't find things like tripower manifolds, but two fours I think are available, as well as tons of single aluminum manifolds, plus headers, etc. The turbo 400 is a known quantity also.
They are also pretty solid engines, with lots of dependablity built in. If you can score it free or cheap you will have done very good.
Don
It's that motor that's in our '47 Ford cruiser. More closely allied to Caddy than Chev.....a good reliable engine.
Would be a good un in your '56.
Thats great info guys. I am currently building a 55 Gasser with 454 power. That will be a strip only car. I did acquire two beater 56's and used the best frame and best body. I have a left over 55 rear because I used Ford 9 for the drag car. With Olds power and trans, I could at least get it mobile for now. It would be fuggly though. (let's not say "Rat", ok?)
Anyone know if the block mounts for Olds are same as Chevy? I think I even have a spare trans crossmember mount around here somewhere.
