327 engine advice

Hey Guys and Gals. Ive read through a few of these posts and realized that i know alot less about engines then i thought ahaha. Last weekend i went out and bought my first vehicle, a 1965 Impala Sports Sedan. I payed $2600(Canadian) for it, original paint, all the chrome, mint dash, runs great and looks good. As of now im not driving it, but im in the process of boosting as much horsepower as i can over these winter months. Right after i bought it i went to a parts store and picked up new distributor and cap, new plugs and wires, new gaskets for oil pan, tranny pan and valve covers, a new set of Edelbrock Valvecovers and a K&N Air Filter. I havent installed any of this yet because its just to cold out, and the Pala is just alittle to big to fit into the garage haha. So i was just wondering what you guys would suggest i buy next, or what to rebuild. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. hope to hear from someone soon.

has the engine been rebuild or is it still stock? if its still stock i would bore it 30 over put a stage 3 or 4 over rv cam in it with a 600 cfm Edelbrock carb. and a high rise Edelbrock intake on it. and some roller rockers and also 350 big valve heads on it. it should come out sweet.

before going hog wild on performance goodies & go to the "old post in CHR AND READ
as much as you can". then you'll know "what to ask & how" and "how to answer when

the previous owner did say he rebuilt it right after he bought it 2 years before. But thats one thing i didnt get a receipt for so im thinking that could have been a ploy. I do have receipts on almost everything else, like new brakes, windshield, springs and shocks. The carb is running rich, and theres a tiny bit of heisitation if you punch the gas to fast. Im not sure on the carb but i know its new, and i was thinking about getting new camshafts. Im just new with this type of thing and want to learn as much as possible. thanks for the input CD

Sorry im alittle slow on the replys here haha. Um yeah brakes, suspension and steering are incredible.
And the transmission is the original 2 speed powerglide. Theres actually no problems with it, no leaks, clinks or shaking.
For an automatic it really jumps when starting off, and really opens up when the 4 barrel kicks in. Just driving it home i hit 110 mph with nothing at all done to the vehicle.
Its pretty amazing the condition, other than that the interior needs to be redone and a new paint job and a small amount of body work will be a big slice out of my pocket.

If I were 16-17, I'd drive the "hell out of it the way it is" and keep up on the all the maintenance, while learning more about motors and such ,(and you can spend money on "another" block and heads to "learn on" & start to build it ) :D "then just pray for the one your running to DIE so you can put your first rebuild "HIpo " motor in" :LOL: "that's just my opinion", (then you'd still have a ride and be learning)
or you could go with what CD667 said .

to answer questions when you get stuck.( if you decide to try your hand at it ,so it won't be such a big slice ) plus then you can say, you did it your "own self!"

Thanks Treekiller, Tech1 and streets. Yeah this is the only car i have, and the first vehicle ive ever owned. Tech1 thats Edelbrock rebuild on the 350 helps me undertand alittle more on what ill need to learn. Im pretty sure i dont want over 400hp in my first car haha. Thanks for the heads up on doing my own body work too. Im gunna check the forum on it after this post and see exactly what id need to do to fix alittle rust and 2 dings. Im quite familiar with metalworking at the basic level. I can MIG, ARC and Braze well enough that im one of the top of my class in welding. so i can get the thing back together, its just whether or not how clean it looks ahah. Plus after this im gunna search all around and get as much information on my engine as possible. But as of now im heading out to move my car back into the drive way so no one rear ends me haha. Its snowing heavy and i dont feel like seeing someone skid into the back of the Pala. Thanks again for your help everyone

got an Idea on "your wish list", for a color on your ride yet ?

haha well heres alittle snag for you. I picked up my K&N airfilter earlier today and the guys at the parts store ordered in the wrong filter. Im fine with that but i got talking to one of the guys there and they said that i can get this special setup were it comes with the K&N filter, but with a filter as a cover and a filter as the bottom. So this would pretty much take away all the casing and produce more airflow. I can get them as big as i want, so i was wondering if i should keep with the original chevy specs or measure the underhood clearnce and get the filter as big as i possibly can. But in the future would this affect me if i was to buy a new carb, maybe too big and would rub the airfilter against the hood. I dont know, im split on either way. Oh and i do have 3 different colors picked out. I was thinking about keeping the original yellow colour, or a sort of Metallic green or blue. eventually ill put on some links to show you exactly what i mean haha.

WhAt!@!@!@! are you serious!

I'm 16 and it seems like I cant get enough horsepower....i think it's an addiction! thats why i may opt to throw a blower atop the 327 in my chevelle! Once you've had horsepower you dont wanna go back!
