This is a stock bore motor that came out a 65 corvette. It has the 461 double hump heads. I have an edlebrock performer intake and 600 cfm carb. the crank and main bearings are in good shape.the cam is not, two worn lobes and lifters. got a 67 C10 w/ a 4 speed, 4.10 gears that i want to put it in. just wanted to know if anyone had any good ideas for a hot srteet motor?
"Crank and bearings are OK" you checked them by looking at them or had them inspected. My 70,000 mile crank "looked good" and the machine shop said i could get by with just pollishing it but, for what i was wanting to build they recomended (and I fully agreed" to turn the crank 10. Since it was going in a "HOT MOTOR". My rods looked good to but I had to get two of them resized.
Get that block to your machine shop and build a good foundtion to start with, you can add the cam and heads after the block checks out.
I'm building a 283 (into a 301) and after months of hashing over dozens of ideas I came to the conclusion to build it like Chevrolet did. You ain't gona out guess their engineers. Pattern it after the 327 with 350 HP but back off on the compression(from 11:1 to 10:1) because of todays pump gas. Or do the 11:1 and everything else like they did if it's just a weekend toy and run race gas. Zillions of aftermarket cams but GM has a reason with the specific L79 cam specs that the motor liked. L79 all the way!
PS,,,,,,if you don't run the 11:1 CR then go with an aftermarket, something like comps 268 or so depending on CR to match.Just my 2cents worth.
Since the cam has failed, there is shrapnel throughout the motor, in the oil galleys, everywhere. Your first step in rebuilding this motor will be to scrub it to within an inch of its life with bore and galley brushes and other specialty tools.
If you don't clean this motor, you'll leave shavings in the galleys that will eat your new motor up in short order.
Been there, done that.

I.M.O.,very few cylinder heads have a high enough exhaust to intake ratio to use a symmetrcial camshaft.
The carb sounds a bit small doesn't it?
