@ Ayers,
there's something wrong with this thread, I guess you're not getting much help out of it :3dSMILE:
About your engine:
1) Never touch a running system (until you really want to)
If you're thinking about doing this now and that later, then don't. Wait and do it all at the same time. Maybe you can learn from our mistakes. As TT said: Doing small things at a time wastes no end of money (believe me  ) Think exactly about what you want, then get hold of all the parts and put the combo together in one go. Opening and closing your engine a lot will cost you hundreds only in gaskets and RTV.
2) I wouldn't get just a package from Edelbrock and put it on. If at all, then you want to take the engine out and completely tear it down. Chances are it will need reboring and there's nothing worse than part-rebuilding an engine, driving it for 5000 miles and then find out you've spun a bearing because you didn't swap out an old ratty connecting rod. (Ask me  )
3) the eninge is the last thing you want to do. If you want a good paint job, plush steering etc., that will already cost you at least much more than you thought.
4) Even though it might seem a little boring: Do the THINKING as the first part, not like me :D :D :D
About your steering:
My steering (Chevy van, similar size and weight and driving-habits as the pickups) is so loose I can go from lock to lock with one finger with no trouble. But I got used to it and it's really nice in a heavy daily driver when you have to find parking spaces somewhere. Most important, the steering mustn't have any play in it, play combined with a loose steering is a pain.
What brakes do you run? Some of the pickups had Hydra-Boost brakes which run off the same power-pump as the steering box. That way I don't think you can change the pressure relief spring without hurting your brake power (anybody correct me if I'm wrong). With vacuum brakes I guess you can always install steering-shocks, maybe dual. But I've never tried that, maybe someone else can give you info on steering shocks...
As always, that's just my opinion, thinking loud sort of...
Max
SO THESALS!
