I know the best way to fix a busted starter hole is at the machine shop. Have any of you fixed one yourself? Its the usuall break of about half the thread about 3/4" long on the outside starter bolt hole on the block. The piece that broke off is lone gone. Should it be completly welded up with a cast iron rod, redrilled and tapped?
have fixed iron blocks the way to fix this is to open it up so you can weld it so it go,s past the threads and grind it out all of the old threads and fill with 99 nickel i will tell you the rod that i use .before some one chimes in. i have fix many block with this rod and it works the best period use it. i have try other they do not work as good it is weld mold 700 rod heat to 400 with a torch work back to get a big area warm weld abit stop pein keep warm by warming with a torch weld some pein till done let cool slow grind and tap here are things that may help you the you need to heat to do the repair this keeps the iron from get hard in the heat zone if you get it hot and cools you will have a hard spot and it will not tap. the rod works the best in ac . with this rod i have fixed decks bolt hole weld long cracks out side an in side of the block and welded oil pan rails up parts were gone and filled them with this rod it works if you can not fine it you can buy it from them on the net at weldmold there in mich
Find someone who can do this with metal spray. If you've got $500, you can buy the torch for yourself. But, metal spray is the best way to repair this kind of damage and the repair is completely machineable. The repair is quick, they shouldn't charge you more than an hour's labor.
do you have one ??? i do . now do you want to buy it ?it is not the best it is just a nother way to do the job. the rod i use works better . i have used both and know. now if you gmc1500 can tell me that you fix a block every day with a spray torch i am all ears :LOL:keep dreaming and hour? that block will have to be in a oven for a hour the hotter you get that block the more you need the put it in a oven . if not you will have a spot hard like glass i do know this first hand with the spray torch . you just do not know? i have done this repair what do you think they put in the hoppper on the spray torch ? that would be 99 nickle that is an 100 machineable the rod works fine.you know this is a big joke i spend the time to tell somone what works with out a oven and what rod i have used over 5 years and you come on and you say spray torch . i would or should post photos of all the repair i have done with this rod but weld mold is not paying me. all i can say is the hopper torch can work only if you have a oven and at this point fixing it with iron filler rod ? which some will say is the only way to fix iron. so from now on only post less you have done the repair with photos and signed papers:LOL:Quote:
