You can move up to the 1.94 valve heads to make it breath a little better. My 283 still has the 1.72 intakes but I'm thinking of moving up. As far as a cam it kinda depends on alot of things. I have had good luck with the 327 cu in 350 hp cam in mine. I think it's discontinued at G.M. but is made by some aftermarket cam grinders.

1.94 1.6's world work good 2.02 1.6's even better but they are getting $$$
1.94's don't work as good as you might think on a 283. The cylinder walls shroud the valves a bit. 283 hi-po heads have smaller valves with big ports, seem to make as much power as the big 'uns.
The 350 horse 327 cam is a good one, I've had them in 283, 327 and 350 engines.
You may be better off with some 305 heads or aftermarket 305 heads (World Products 305 Torquer heads) as the cylinder walls will not shroud the valves and create those kinds of combustion problems. You can pocket port 305 heads and they will perform much better than the old 327 heads.
Yeah, what rum said. Rather then just looking at valve sizes, look at the overall potential of the head for improving performance.... There is a whole lot more to cylinder head efficiency then just valve size. Sometimes smaller IS better!!!

the heads i now have are the power pack (pyramid) marking 1965. i've been running the comp magnum 270 with 1.6 roller tips for at least 5 yrs.the impala runs strong with a th 350 ,shift kit and 355 posi especially in the mid rpm range and going through the 3 gears it chirps the tires when shifting from first to second.i was just wondering if 194 heads would let it breath better.isn't that the largest size on a stock bore 283? the carb is a edl 600 cfm on a edl hi rise..thanks for any more ideas !

I do remember putting the 1.94's on a bunch of the old 283's back about the same time Lassie was a pup. They did help the performance, but as rum said, the technology and flow charachteristics of the new heads would be even better... Depends on how much money you want to spend, and how close to original you would want the car to remain....
i'm looking at world heads from summitt cast iron loaded with 194's for $759 a pair.already have hardened valves for puke gas.
