Head-gasket alignment problem, head question

Thanks for looking - and helping if you are able-

I currently have a crate engine in my car. The previous owner swears it is a 330hp GM crate engine from Summit Racing, but the only 330hp engine I could find over there has Vortec heads, and mine have 6 intake bolt holes, so I don't see how these could be Vortec heads. I have seen some Vortec heads with 6 bolt holes, but the cast also had "Vortec" molded into it. Perhaps there are other versions of the Vortec? My casting # is 462624.

You can see that the intake ports are not square, but they are wider at the bottom with a little notch left in at the top corner - obvious in this photo http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...4062Medium.jpg

When I put the Edelbrock intake gasket for my Performer RPM intake (6-bolt), it matches right up http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...DSCN4057sm.jpg

When I put the same gasket on the heads, they don't line up so well and look like this (making me think they are not correct for these heads http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...DSCN4066sm.jpg

My questions:
1- Can this possibly be a Vortec, or some other head?
2- Could this head (casting 462624) possibly have been on a high performance GM crate engine?
3- Why such a big difference in port size/shape between the Edelrock intake ports and the GM head ports? Is the difference normal?

Thanks for any help. I want to make sure I am using the right gasket this time because the last one had a bad leak.

Heads would need a bit of porting to match.... The Edelbrock intake is probably designed to be a universal type fit for all the chebby heads as there were numerous changes in runner configuration over the years. The matchup isn't perfect, but for street use probably not a big issue.... Maybe one of the chebbie guys will have a better answer for you.

vortec?

Hi, allthough I'm not the most knowledgable one when it comes to narrowing down paticulars on things like this I also have heads on my "350" with the same casting #'s-462624 and have been told that they are a stock chevy head that definetly is not vortec. Mine actually trace back to a "76" 350 motor and I have them on a "73" block. Am running a holley street dominator dual plane intake with the standard six bolts down each side. Unfortunatly, I have also been told that these are pretty low on the list of the "good" high performance stock heads. And as DennyW stated I was informed that they are crack-prone, also. Personnally I am looking at some DART Iron Eagle heads from S-D for about $750 complete with bolts and gaskets. They seem to run ok but I'm looking to get a little more out of mine. Good luck with them.

624 casting heads im pretty sure come out on the 290hp GM crate motor.
330hp vortec should also be a roller cam, 4 bolt main one piece rear seal block.

Thanks for the help so far. I guess a little porting can only help. Perhaps it is time to invest $500 in GM's Iron Vortec heads to give this engine a little bump.

I sure wish sellers were more honest. Steve Yanda at Yons Racing (Colliers, WV) told me numerous times that this was the 330hp GM crate engine he paid $2800 for. This isn't even close.

If you want to use those heads you will need to get out the old die grinder a do something called a "port match.
Alothough not 100% necesary this is what I would do.
I do this for every engine I build weather it is 200 hp torque engine or a 700 hp engine.
I think it is a good practice to do.
In another post someone mentioned the Dart s/s heads.
Another idea would be A World products head with a port volume of 165 cc.
Also take a look at the smaller port volume 170 or less alum. imported heads from Austraila.

This is best done with the heads off and dis-assembled.

Thanks - but if there isn't really any notable difference by port matching these heads, I will just leave them as-is until I get a new set of heads.

100 percent normal,cheap mass produced rough cast factory heads,opposed to high dollar after market precision casting.Put it together and have no worries on that issue.
