    I need help

hello, I have a 1969 chevy nova the i just installed a rebuilt chevy 350, my problem is that i started the car for the first time. The car was running at 1500rpm's for 15 min to break in the cam, when i notice the #8 exhaust tube in the pass. side header glowing red, the car was back firing from the exhaust from time to time, i checked timming, wiring order and everything is fine, after the car ran for 18min the lower rad. hose blew off from the water pump. So i shut the car down. iam out of ideas. Stock 350 with a dual dual plane weiand intake, 600 holly, headers, HEI, MSD 8mm wires, and dual exhaust with 40 series flowmaster. thanks

The back firing is generaly timing If that was right I'd check the dist cap. I'd guess the hose blew off because of overheating. What rad. cap are you using? or was the clamp just loose? I realy haven't a clue why just one tube would be glowing unless the valves aren't adjusted right, and that could cause the backfiring also. Hang in there there are a bunch of otheres on here that should have input.
Also Welcome aboard your in the right place

sounds like the hose was loose. shouldn't have blown off if the motor did run hot. i'd check the valve adj., and be sure the carb. is adj. properly. check the plug and comp. on that cylinder, compared to another cylinder and see if you can find something dif.

If it was ONLY the #8 cylinder that was the problem, it would have to be a problem with the valve adjustment on that one. Who did the rebuild on this? Did you have a temp gauge on this (hope so) and what was it reading? The hose coming off could have been just loose, and the pressure blew it off...Im hoping it wasnt because it overheated, cause if it did, you might have other problems. Start by pulling the valve covers and adjust all the valves again, right thru the firing order. As you bring each cylinder up to TDC on the compression stroke, feel the rocker arms for excessive movement before you adjust anything. That will tell you if you may have damaged the cam or lifters. If there is a lot of clearance at this point, investigate further. Re-check the plug wires as far as placement, and make sure the ignition timing is set properly. Many guys dont have enough advance during start-up, and this causes it to run hot. ( But not just on one cylinder) You can have a lot of advance on break-in as there is no load on the engine. John

The fuel bowl level is set by turning the screw on top of the bowl, and in your case you need to turn it counterclockwise, this will raise the fuel level. You need to hold steady the locking nut with a wrench at the same time. On the passenger side of the carb bowl you will find a check screw which needs to be removed enitirely. When the fuel reaches the level of the lower edge of that hole, the fuel level is set correctly.
Objects in my rear view mirror are a good thing unless,.... they have red and blue lights flashing.
