My Dyno Numbers....ok???

....Hey Everyone ;).... The place that built my motor just called & said that it was on the Dyno, to come on over & hear it run if I wanted. They said it was already broken in & tuned up. They had asked me a few weeks ago if I wanted to be there on 'Dyno day' & I replyed; "YES", please call me the day before you put it on and I'll be there. So I'm am going to go over there tomorrow morning to 'hear it run'. I'm a little disapointed that I didn't get to be there for the actual 'dial in'. He said the Tq. was 497 & the HP was in the 450 range {he didn't have the dyno sheet in front of him}. Well I was hoping for more {OF COURSE, what hot rodder in there right mind would want LESS HP???}. Anyway, I'm just wondering if there is anything I should ask them tomorrow??? In regards to what did they or didn't they do or not do to 'tune it'??? I should ask to see a 'full power' dyno pull, shouldn't I??? Is there any info that I should get from them in regards to; the temperature that day, etc.... And I will ask for a copy of the Dyno results... I guess I'm just disapointed because I thought it'd put out more :(... ANY feed back at all would be great ;) Thanks Everyone, Bill

motor is; 413 small block, AFR 195 street heads, 10 to 1 compression, 750 double pumper {gone through by the Carb shop}, Edelbrook Air Gap RPM manafold, cam is Comp Cams, 490 lift w/ 1.6 rockers, 230/236 duration, 4/7 firing order..... Thanks Again ;()

4/7 swap firing order on a hyd. cam?Did I read this correct?
I am not sure what hp levels you wanted but this is not that far off.
To get over 500 hp you will need a hdy. roller cam or a mech. roller cam.
Heads,intake, carb. looks good to me.

Thank You Eric ;)... woops, I guess I forgot to mention that, yes it is a hyd. cam.... I guess I should be happy & I probably shouldn't have run it through Desk Top Dyno. It had it at a little over 500 for TQ. & HP... But then I'm sure I manipulated it to say what I WANTED to see; r/e what really constatutes a 'high flow' dual plane??? compaired to a 'Max' flow one, etc, etc..... The guy that built it said I'd only pick up 15 or so HP with a Hyd. Roller cam {for $900 to a $1000, not cost effective in my opinion}... Mech. Roller is out as I'm not a maintaintance kind a guy.... This motor put out 438 HP & 499 TQ with a different cam {222/232 duration, about the same lift}... Plus the carburator was built to a stage II level, suppose to be built to 'match' my motor. Guess the thought that'd make a bigger difference.... Thanks Again for the imput, Bill

I can tell you what my last 383 did.
The heads where 195 cc fully CNC ported AFR's.67 cc combustion chamber.Yes, the heads where to large.They where fitted with 2.08,1.6 valves.
The intake was a Victor with a gasket match and plenum work and a 1 inch spacer.
The carb was a 650 race Demon with more prep work done to it.Flow was a little more than 700 cfm.
The short block had 6 inch rods.
The pistons where JE flat tops with a comp ratio of about 10.7 to 1.
The cam was a Lunati VooDoo solid roller.Specs are .585/600 lift,duration at .050 was 249/255 at .050.on a small base.1.6 rockers where also installed
On the dyno hp was 506 at 6,600, torque was 467.I forget at what rpm.
The lower torque output might be due to the fact that the heads where to large for the engine.
This was done on pump gas 93 octane with 36 degree's total timing.
I did not spend all day on the dyno and I would think there might be some more left in her.
I was some what doubtful with that much compression if it would run on pump gas.
This is really pushing the limits of what you can do on a street engine.
Like I said before you are not that far out.

Sounds like very respectable numbers to me!!! Friend of mine has a chassis dyno in his shop, what a fantastic way to tune on a new engine!!!! This winter when we get new engines ready for the circle burner, we will go up there for an entire day and tune both engines on the dyno. When racing starts in the spring it's just one thing to take off the list of things to get right in order to go fast.. Money well spent IMO.

.... Yeah your right Eric, It's not that far off. I guess I was just being unrealistic.... I don't want to go with as big a cam as you ran either, nor do I want 10.7 to 1 compression. You did bring up an issue that I'd forgotten, and that is pump gas. Last time this motor was dyno'ed it was on race gas. I'll ask but I'll bet it was done on pump gas this time. Does that make a big difference??? Thanks again, Bill

Thanks Dave, Like I just mentioned to Eric, I was just being unrealistic. You know, in my mind, my engine was going to be this "wow, I can't believe it put out THAT much power" motor. I would be the featured article in Hot Rod with the title 'Unbelievable HP/TQ out of a 413 small block'..... ha,ha,ha...... But my main reason for wanting it Dyno'ed was to make sure it would run ok before shipping back to Kansas {from Calif}. If something is wrong I wanted to know it before it got installed in the car....
One more question; Does it really take a whole day of dyno time to hook up {flywheel dyno, $750 a day} & tune a small block???

For a "street tune" I would not spend the $750.
I would ask what it would cost for say 2-3 hrs.Take a couple carb's, intake's.
Play with jetting,ign. timing,cam timing if you have the chance and call it good.

Nope, but we'll be on a chassis dyno and running in and tuning at least 2 engines so an engine swap will be in the works for the day. Andy (friend with the chassis dyno) only charges me so much per run, actual cost of setting up both engines will be around $250.00 vs playing with plug readings, timing, collector lengths, etc. for a few nights of racing instead of running for the front. I'm with Erik on the street tune, a few horse either way doesn't much matter on the street as there are few cars out there putting more then 300 to the ground. Maybe I just take my racing a bit too serious!!! You don't even want to know what we spent this summer just running a Factory Stock..... Next year with the Super Stock and the Mod will probably dig a bit deeper into the kids inheritence!!!!!!!:LOL: :LOL: :LOL:

Heck, we get paid tow money nowadays. With the price of fuel it doesn't quite cover the expense of getting there, but it sure does help!!!!

If they had a bad pileup we go with our tow truck and help but never got paid. We got stoped one night on the way home for towing an unsafe car on the expressway. :eek: :eek: We didn't have a trailer and used a tow truck to get there and back.

.....Eric & Dave, hummm, well I'll find out exactly what's up tomorrow when I go by the shop. I was under the impression that I was being charged $750 for a day on the dyno, but then maybe he just meant $750 a day broken down into the time used. Or, and I hate this 'or', it's the one when you learn that you didn't ask enough question & you pay more than you should.... But anyway, the motor has ALREADY been tuned on the dyno so I guess what ever it is, it is..... So I just hope & pray that it's not $750 for a few hours on the dyno...... Thanks guys, Bill
