Max rpm
What is the max you should rev a factory balanced cast piston 350 to.Is 7000 getting dangerous??Or does it just depend on what kind of power your making at high rpms??

5500 to 5800 if you want it to live very long... It can probably withstand 6000 to 6200 on rare occasions, but it will self destruct if you make a habit of it. If you have it balanced and use forged or hyperuetectic pistons it can withstand 7200 to 7500 consistantly. Add a good steel crank, splayed mains, and high quality connecting rods and expect 8500+. All this is assuming the valve train will keep up...Jim

i have a 350, stock crank, hypereutectic pistons, scat 200 dollar rods, race it, take it to 7200 more often then not, with cast pistons and all stock motor, i wouldnt say no higher then 6500, dont do it all the time, does ur motor even make power that high?

Re: Max rpm
I have a nova with a 355 with a steel crank and JE pistons, it also has camel hump heads, I shift it at 7600 RPM and it still begs for more is my car fast or am i just to good at putting together engines?Jason Talley

Max RPM can usually be determined by the engine not winding any further (usually the intake/exhaust reach it's max capacity or the valves float) or the engine goes BOOM usually followed by expelling pieces and fluids in various directions.
On non hi preformance american V8s (cast crank, 2bolt main, stock rods, stock valve train) 5500-5800 a safe realistic red line.
In my mis-spent youth I had a "built" 289 in a 63 Falcon Futura. Shift point was 7200. It lasted about 5000 miles before it spun 2 bearings.I've NEVER seen a car come from the factory that couldn't be improved.....
