283 yr.66?
Had a busy day today, just looked at a motor a youngster had that he thought was a 350. He wants $175 for the entire motor. It is #3896944 block casting. Has a pressure plate attached so it was in a standard trans.vehicle. My records show this as a 66-67 283 motor. I wouldn't use the motor for anything but would it be worth the $175 to invest in for resale?

gimme mine!!!! and no not really 175 is about what they sell for period.

Thanks Gassersrule 196,if thats the case then I might post a thread about building a 302 from its crank & rods.
-
i shall help you:toocool:

OK,,, first question:HMMM: .I assume I'll need a pre-86 350 block? 2nd question:HMMM: .The 283 crank will fit with spacers? 3rd question:HMMM: **) use the 283 rods but good luck trying to find pistons:CRY:
-
why the hell are you even mentioning a 350 block if you want a 302:confused:
-
use the 283 block nail it .125 over OR find a small journal 327 block use the 283 crank and rods and if you bore it out you will have the luxury of a 4+ inch bore instead of stuck at 4 inch. or if you have 3 grand buy a dz-302 block:3dSMILE:
-
TRW used to have the main bearing spacers so you could use a larger journal block with the 283 crank.
It is easier to use a small journal 327 block, if you can find one in decent condition. Don't use the 283 rods. They're 5.7", but are weaker than the later 327 and up engines.

Gassersrule 196, I'm not wanting to build an 'original' 302 and the 350 blocks have a 4.00 bore that can be bored even larger than the 283 block can, diameter wise, and the 350's are plentyful and cheaper than trying to find a 327 block. It's going in a S10 bracket racer,so no need for originality.Just looking for that high winding pleasure.Chooseing this build over the 305/400 crank that I posted about the other day.
MI2600,thanks.I was thinking that because the 283's came with steel cranks that the rods would have been stronger but you may be right now that I think about it.
-
my rods are perfectly fine up to 7500+ so dont give me that. and if you dont want the 283 ill take it off your hands as a bare block
-
Gassersrule 196,I got the motor today, around 6pm. At 8pm I started tearing it apart. And after seeing the intake and head intake ports I can't for the life of me figure out why anyone would go thru the trouble and expense of boring and souping one of these motors. Now back in the 60's,early 70's yeah I remember and understand why then, but now??? Evidently your interest is either in original resto or just the 283 crank/rods. But hey,I can respect and understand that. As a matter of fact,I wouldn't trade this crank(for 302 purposes) for a complete 383,but thats imo and I know alot of people would ridicule that. Look,I am getting down to the bare block tommorrow,if it's in good shape I'll probably put it up on e-bay and local tradin-times for sale.Your interest in these motors is probably smarter than most of us,,,if you are doing it as a collector/investor. 20 yr's. from now, this little 283 will probably be worth several thou's.
-
how much are you going to want? if its reasonable i might buy it from you very very soon. just a bare block right? thats all i need. BTW nah i race em nothing sounds like a sbc going to 7+ grand:D the next 283 will be either a roller cam motor or a blown one havent decided yet i like them because they are fun
-
Scooter, if I wasn't so damned sentimental I'd let you have my 30/30 cam. It'll buzz 7+ grand in a 283.
-
i have one basically. a .493 .512 the offroad z cam but with allt he new cam tech ive gotta be able to find a damn good one. like i said though if they ran 10's with a 302 then why can i now!
