Bring each cylinder to TDC (compression). Roll the pushrod between your fingers as you tighten the nut. When you get to zero play, tighten it another half turn.

Bear in mind that some folks have different ideas . . . full turn, half turn, quarter turn . . . just about every combination. I use a half turn, and it works fine.
