Oil Filter

I have a 1968 chevy pick up truck with a 327. I have the old type cantester old filter on it. I, so far have been unable to find an adater to use a scerw on type filter. But I got to thinking about it. There is a metal piece that scerws up into the block that the filter fits on. Is it possible that all I have to do is go to a junk yard and find a later model small block and take that piece off of it. In other words, when they change the oil filter type. They only change the piece that fits into the block. And not the block itseft? Thanks John.

go to the parts store and ask for a spin on oil filter adapter, should cost about 30 bucks. www.summitracing.com also sells them, MR. Gasket brand I think

Or go to the chebbie dealer.....he has them and they are
really cheap. One part, a gasket, and two bolts.

So. I take it, I can get the part off a later year small block? I have a 1973 350 small block in another truck in my back yard that takes the spin on filter. Can I get the part I need off of it? Thanks, John.

I,ve also had an idea about welding the bolt on the bottom of the steel canister. The only thing I have agaist the old canister type old filter is that you caint fill it up with oil before you put it on. And it does ten to leak from the bottom of that bolt. So welding that bolt on the bottom of steel canister will elimitate those two issues. What do you think about that? Thanks John

Went out to the old truck in my back yard. Took off the oil filter and the piece bolted up in the block that the filter scerws on to. It fits the 327. But I think the big hole in the block is made to acomedate the steel canister. So when you spin the filter in. There is about 1/8" space all arond the filter. The spin on filter seams to seal up okay. And the inlet and outlet holes seams to look like they will work okay. Do you think they make a spin on filter a little wider that would fill the hole? And what should I pay attention to when I crank the engine. I did fill the filter with oil. If the filter is working okay and there are no leaks. How long before I should see a reading on my oil gage. And How long should It be before the oil gets to the rocker arms? Thanks John.

Oh by the way. When the oil has reach the rocker arms. Does that mean the liftters are all pump up?

That is how it is supposed to fit. Fram P8HA and Wix 51061 are some examples of filters that fit the SBC. There are other numbers that correspond to smaller filters with the same mount, but big filters are good insurance if you have the room.
