I need a good cheap motor so I am going to buy a GM
crate motor long blockwith 194 heads $1,345. 8.5-1
compression 74 cc heads 220 HP , I have new Vortec heads 64 cc
and a Vortec intake GM seed I will have 9.6-1 compression
using my Vortec heads but will lose my warranty which is ok with me .
Is this a good idea and how much HP increase should I expect ?
The motor will be for street use in my 1977 Chevy 1/2 ton short wide
2 wheel drive lowered
i would not go to the trouble to change heads. just change the cam and go.
I had bought same motor through jegs. I just put a performer intake , edelbrock 600 and headers for a 77 4x4. It pushed it around pretty good for a every day driver. It would've run better with cam and msd ign.
Both of the above guys are exactly correct. This is the deal of the century, I bought one and installed it in a vette for a customer. Easiest installl I've ever done, and super cheap.

I would run the engine for a little while and make sure everything is good with it. I know of two that had problems on startup. Keep the warranty good for a couple thousand miles at least and then the best power adder to that engine is the vortec heads. I put one in my cousins '82 Camaro with stock heads, performer intake, 268 Comp, 600 Edelbrock carb, and Accel HEI distributor. It ran O.K. but when we changed the heads, it was like we built a new engine.

Just a note.......... Are you aware that you can buy that same engine over the parts counter at just about any G.M. dealer for about the same amount of money and you don't hafta pay for shipping ?????

I've got that same motor in my '69 PU and I can run it on AM PM reg. with a quadrapuke and 373's I still get better milage than the wife's 2002 Taurus. It doesn't complain- so I don't.
Let it eat. I'd say just drive it, and keep the warrenty.
