you guys are starting to read my mind now... unfoutunately my #1 factor IS lack of funds. i know the 305 wont be too fast, but i will go w/ a 600 cfm 4bbl, edel. intake, headers to move it along down the fwy. my nexr project will get all the real race parts..'28-33 coupe or p/u. anyways a buddu of mine has a 305 in his 4d 49 ford and quite surprised. --not scary fast, but more than i expected .
ps does the 700r4 need any computers?
I'm no expert, but I think it needs a switch to control the lockup.

700r4 needs a kit (speedway) to go into overdrive easy to use... you have to be careful of the kickdown for a 700r4 it HAS to have the right arm on the carb and properly adjusted or it will screw up the tranny

Chassis engineering has universal mounts for eng. and trans. and the whole set-up less than $150. Your Merc. (if I remember correctly) has a low geared rear and the 700r4 or 200r4 would be best choice and with the lower 1st gear in the 700 that 305 will be pretty peppy around town, even if all you add is some small tube headers. A stock 4 barrel carb and intake (from a buddy, free?) with a rv type cam would really make a nice set-up on the cheap (ebay headers $60 or so, cam and lifters $70 at Summit).
